Pickpocketing: No feedback
Description
==========
Was told by a DM to report this as a possible bug. I got pickpocketed last night and did not get any feedback, not that I did spot it, nor that I did not spot it. Evidently the expected behavior is to get a notification whether you noticed it IC or not.
Steps to reproduce
----------------------------
Be pickpocketed
Expected result
-----------------------
Receive a notification in chat that tells you whether or not you noticed the attempt.
Actual result
-------------------
Was pickpocketed and received no notification.
Thanks.

Re: Pickpocketing: No feedback
I think the DM you reported this to might have gotten a little confused. You only receive a notification if you succeed with the spot check to notice the pickpocketing attempt. What they probably got confused about is that IF you make the spot check, you notice the pickpocketing attempt whether it succeeds or fails.
These are the four situations that can occur with a pickpocketing attempt, only the last two shows up to the person being pickpocketed.
You fail to notice the attempt and the attempt fails
You fail to notice the attempt and the attempt succeeds
You succeed to notice the attempt and the attempt fails
You succeed to notice the attempt and the attempt succeeds
Note that the rolls to spot and actually pickpocket something are entirely separated. To succeed with a pickpocketing attempt the pickpocket merely needs to beat a DC of 20 (30 if the target is hostile) whereas the check to notice a pickpocketing attempt is the pickpockets pick pocket skill vs the defenders spot skill (+10 to the defenders spot if they are hostile).

Re: Pickpocketing: No feedback
Is a d20 roll included in the spot attempt or is it straight skill vs skill?
Ok well that makes sense too. I guess it doesn't clear up my gray area RP question that I initially asked the DM but this probably isn't the forum for that.

Re: Pickpocketing: No feedback
A d20 roll is involved.

Re: Pickpocketing: No feedback
Just to piggyback, do bystanders get to roll to notice the attempt as well?
Re: Pickpocketing: No feedback
Not to my knowledge, no.
Re: Pickpocketing: No feedback
Do the pickpocket and the target both roll a d20 in the opposed spot/pickpocket check?
Re: Pickpocketing: No feedback
They should, yes.
