Are the resource gathering tools, such as the pickaxe and the gemhammer, the best for gathering materials?
I would appreciate any hard numbers, if they exist.

I don't have any hard numbers, but I can tell you that when I switched to a pickaxe, my gathering speed increased tremendously. I didn't seem to get more resources, I just got them faster.
