Traps and Skill Mastery

Post by Archnon » Wed Sep 25, 2019 6:56 pm

So right now the state of traps on this server is pretty rough. They can be found and obtained everywhere but they are used by almost no one. In PVE you get no credit for setting a trap because you don't get the experience for trap kills. In addition, the PVP rules about traps are fairly restrictive. You basically can't set a trap for PVP purposes unless 1.) RP has happened 2.) PVP has initiated 3.) You are absolutely sure your trap will hit the right character. However, traps are a key part of the package for lots of classes like rogues and rangers.

I think the PVP rules are really good a necessary. However, I think there is a simple change that would make the use of traps in PVP more viable.

Redo the Skill Mastery feat to give it a little more umph and open it up to classes that have set-trap as a class skill. Right now it gives an automatic 20 when setting or removing a trap in combat. However, this is pretty worthless as setting a trap while you are being beaten on by a WM will result in lots of damage from the WM and you blowing up too when he triggers the trap under his feet. The other option is to run around a corner, set a trap and hope you get it done before he follows you, and also hope there are no passersby that walk over your set trap.

My suggestion is to have Skill Mastery give a bonus to set trap (+10) to increase DC and allow you to set a trap and remain concealed. PVP begins, character hides (this is the only viable way to set a trap), sets the trap nearby still concealed, and positions herself to draw the opponent directly over the trap. Then you can regulate cross traffic and make sure you are clear of your trap as are other non-pvp players. It might make the trap market more viable and create an interesting niche for players to combat heavy melee builds with tricks.

Approved for a trap rework, possibly including aspects of the above suggestion.
