Reduce some smithing DCs?

Post by Nekonecro » Thu Sep 24, 2020 12:01 am

Would it be possible to bring down some of the DCs in smithing? specifically the 50+ ones that come from making MD weapons.
As it stands right now discounting rune work smithing is the only craft that requires a full investment of crafting to be able to make it's end game gear. Nearly all if one takes the gift of crafting leaving usually 9 points to invest in another skill.

The other crafting skills usually have a point investment that allows for some flexability allowing a character to be decent in two crafts while smithing tends to be an "all in" or just enough to make ingots.
Perhaps reduce the DCs down to between 45 or somewhere within the upper 40 range which would allow for roughly (if the maths are correct) 75% minimum chance of a mastery roll if you invest a full (including the crafting gift) 60 points.

Taking the 50 points instead then allows you to get mastery rolls, but far less frequently and doesn't punish those that don't take the crafting gift with a 1-2 fail roll. For comparison, Ashwood shortbow + Longbow, DC 49. Hand Spinneret, DC 29 (+4 weapon), Ashwood heavy crossbow, DC 50. Assuming you -2 from these DC's for the rolls, these then sit below the max allotment of 50

This I believe will allow the choice about smithing to be more of a mastery vs diversity instead of a mandatory all in if you want your final weapon.
