Hey all. I am asking for advice in a good fantasy map maker. I have had Campaign Cartographer in the past but it was rather pricey, and I see the newest version is also. Surely there is something much easier on the wallet, or perhaps free, out there, as there is such an abundance of free or nearly free software for all manners and purposes.
All advice is appreciated!

Re: Fantasy Map Making Sofware
I've used the rpg maker series; they've gotten progressively easier to use, but considerably more restrictive after rpg maker xp. RMXP allowed three layers (four with creative event work) and a lot of flex when it came to importing materials and mapping. Newer versions all use autotiles, but require a disable/copy-paste method when getting creative. And the new versions only have two layers to work with.
....
I probably should ask. What sort of maps are you looking at making? I'm not familiar with campaign cartographer, so....2d? 3d? Printable or digital-only?

Hmm ... well, digital photos that you can print. Let us say, like any traditional AD&D map that would be included in a module.
