Huh. I don't know what I expected but it wasn't that. Btw, this might be considered borderline NSFW in some workplaces?

I'm still excited, but other than telling us who the big bads are gonna be, it doesn't say much about the game.

I lost my appetite watching that, should be a warning that it's vomit inducing. I say this purely based on the content of the trailer and not the game, company or whatever.

Yeh it was very gross. I popped it up at work and even though we are a pretty liberal workplace that does games and VR and such, I had to look around to make sure no one was watching over my screen at work who didn't want to retch by just glancing my way.

It's actually D&D canon. It's a process called ceremorphosis (although I always imagined it took a while longer to happen).

TIL. I never did know much about illithids. According to the FR wiki, the illithid tadpole first has to eat the human's whole brain, and then after a week, it pops out of its human cocoon as a shiny new illithid, ready to enact mass psionic catastrophe. Seems like you're right that it takes a while longer, but I guess it's more dramatic this way.

Remember that there are many editions and many versions!
The original Baldur Gate games used... 2E, I think? ADnD.
We use 3-3.5 in Arelith.
The FR wiki is a mish-mash of every edition.
The new game may as well use Pathfinder.

From what I've heard, they intend to implement 5e in some form (at least in terms of mechanics) and include tools similar to Divinity: Original Sin 2.

Oh, I'm definitely not criticizing. I'd much rather watch an illithid burst from someone's head dramatically and slowly over a week. FR tends to have some wonky lore anyway, so I'm totally cool with them swapping it out when it makes sense, if it makes for a better game and more compelling story.

I'm excited about the 5E being implemented, but given that the Divinity series are turn-based, I hope they do keep the real-time aspect of the BG series for this upcoming one.

3.5 will always have nostalgia for most of us, but 5e does tabletop roleplay justice. It's a good system. It could be better, but it also could be a whole lot worse.

5E is great for tabletop, because people are dumb and slow, but a game running off of such a simplified system, which is really intended for storytelling with an active DM, would get boring. There's no reason for it when you have a computer to handle the technicalities of a more robust system for you.

Yeah it'd be cool if it uses 5e, I always thought it'd make for a more palatable transition to the screen then the older editions; it'd be neat to see if I still feel that way afterwards lol.

Plus the class archetypes are a super cool/fun/fluffy way to specialize your character in a way with some instant gratification I always felt was lacking in the other editions.

I don't get how its Baldur's Gate 3 though with the Bhaalspawn saga effectively over.

Better have Minsc in it... cant have a proper BG game without Minsc.

this is why i said its for dummies

everyone and their instant gratification. I know a few people who have tried 5e and came back to 2nd and 3rd simply because its over simplified

Some info on the sped up ceremorphosis, the devs have said that as part of the story the Illithids have discovered a way to speed up the process dramatically (What you see in the trailer) and so they're pushing hard to expand their empire once more.

I watched the first developer diary -pretty funny, seems like a good atmosphere as far as developers go- and I'm interested to see how this game will shape up. Its not like we're not already in a revival of the genre with Pillars of Eternity and their own Divinity being the big runners up.

Its not being crowdfunded though.. so maybe there will be some big licenced money behind what they can do?

Even Pathfinder Kingmaker was ~okay~ so I feel like they'll need to do something pretty impressive to make it stand out. Although maybe the Forgotten Realms setting will be cool enough to do that.

Personally I still haven't even gotten around to Pillars 2.. these games are so darned long that I'll never get around to playing it probably!

They've mentioned that they are using the 5E as a baseline rules system, but when things aren't fun they iterate until it is. From the article:
Our approach has been implementing it as pure as we can, and then just seeing what works and what doesn't. Stuff that doesn't work, we start adapting until it does.
The full article is worth a read.
