Change the specialist to the class called expert, and allow it as a base class. Tone down the epic skill focuses (regular skill focus in non epic play) and make them not able to multiclass.
Will create a neat niche of people that adventure with a good deal of skills, and could be masters at their specialties, without relying on getting specialist levels in the epics for skill dumping purposes.
I would be more than happy to whip something up that is by no means powerful, but would appeal to those that might want to have characters that can carve out niches not based on crafting (since commoner appears to have a lock on that). I liked the specialist class and had a concept in mind, but when I actually read a little more I was saddened it was a epic level class.
