New coloured text on portal list.

Post by Nekonecro » Thu Nov 07, 2019 8:12 am

Is it possible to choose a different set of colours for the new portal list?
Or potentially use prefixes (Sur,Cit,DS) without the colour change?

As it stands right now I'm having a little trouble reading the list with the current colour selection.
They are rather saturated and approach the eye bleeding territory for myself.

Not going to lie, it's kind of ugly.
I mean, I appreciate the effort, but it's hard to look at.

I think part of the consideration was to make it useable for players with color blindness/perception weakness.

The colors don't bother me so much, but the fact that the same portals are listed twice, once with the server prefix in front of them and once without is a problem. The list is excessively long. I would like to see the list cleaned up. Choose one style and remove the other, please.

Could using brighter colors only for server tags be a solution?

Thanks for the feedback guys!
I am working on this, the list should be cleaned up soon.
The different colours were designed to help players easily distinguish between portals that require server transitions and portals that do not. As DM Eyeball mentioned, the colours were picked to help players with colourblindness/perception weaknesses and I followed the dialogue colouring guide as well (initially I wanted to use green and red but in a dialogue red usually means that the option is not available).

I suggest keeping the colours on the prefix alone then
the colours are easier to read in small portions, an example being the food, rest, water text.

In larger text however it's rather hard to look at. I find my eyes to have trouble fixating on the text because of this.
Perhaps I am just weird? I don't know.
But as things stand right now I am having a very hard time reading the portal text.

This is a more complicated solution but what about only coloring the portals that would require a transition. So if you are on surface, all c&p portals would be yellow or orange. Then you
Would only have half or less a color and it would be more striking to stay, hey this is different! Plus you could limit it to one color.

The portal list should be cleaned up now.

This is a great QoL improvement all around. Thanks!

Overall, I like this way more than how it used to be and I'd take this over the old list any day. A huge thank you for that.

Although, I also second what some others have said about the colors.

Slightly softer versions of the colors would be a lot easier on the eyes. Something a bit like [Sur] Cordor Frontier and [Dis] Sibayad (Outskirts), rather than [Sur] Cordor Frontier and [Dis] Sibayad (Outskirts).

EDIT: I asked a friend of mine with a type of red-green colorblindness(protan), showing the image below, and they actually said the strong saturation looks identical to them, but the softer version they could easily tell apart.
Image

Top two:
Top two are fine
I can tell them apart np
Bottom two:
While I had discord on my smaller screen I was like I SEE NO DIFFERENCE but then I move it to my bigger screen and.... well I still can't really tell the difference. I would not be able to tell them apart in a game AT ALL as the only time I can see a difference is for a split second when I look at them, after that the look so close it kinda..
@Artenides - They don't mind giving feedback on other color samples as well, if you wanted me to run different colors by them.

I have perception issues. The bright green and yellow swim for me and make it hard to focus. I have to spend a lot of time squinting or leaning forward to refocus and look for the portal I want.

The soft yellow/dark green contrasts provided by Twily were easier on my eyes, too.

Same, I find it quite harder to read, maybe toggle it off so we can pick?

Hi guys,

Thanks for the suggestion. Allow me some time to discuss this with the dev team before jumping on the solution!

A couple portals got missed in the clean-up.

Image

These two have no pre-fix, unlike the other portals and should be removed:
3) Sibayad (Outskirts)
6) Sibayad Town Docks

And this one, which is formatted correctly, is listed on the wrong server:
5) (DIS) Sibayad (Town) Docks

This portal is actually on the Surface server.

Hmm this actually shouldn't happen, querying the database for the portal data supposed to return unique portal names only. Thanks for reporting this, I will investigate. I may need some additional info later from you.

I've noticed a big difference between my List on c&p and on surface servers. On c&p the list is nice and neat. On surface it is mangled, unordered, and doubles up portals in the list. I can try to submit images later if needed.

COrdor frontier is another that's showing prefix and no prefix.

I haven't forgotten about this, its just life has been busy lately.
This is a rather strange bug... could you guys check if you have any favourited portals and remove all from that list? Then check the portals again.
