Does a moon elf really have the exposure to tell the difference between a Deurgar and a Shield Dwarf fully covered in plate and wearing a helm (no visible skin)? Same goes for a Drow vs a moon elf, a Rock Gnome vs a Svirfneblin and so on.
It might be interesting to offer only members of that race the instant perception of that sub-race (e.g. Deurgar can spot Deurgar or Shield Dwarves or Gold Dwarves and vice versa with no Spot Check because they know their kin). Barring being a member of that racial group, you'd need a spot check to identify the specific sub-race.
With a failed spot it could surface some generic (Dwarfkin) or something along those lines. It'd be a lot more realistic and I think play nicely into the whole disguise scheme we have going.
We could actually tie in helmets here too and make this only trigger when helmets are on and toggled to be visible so it's even more consistent IC'ly. Would make people think about this a lot more and metagame less.

I agree, and would likely foster more RP and give more weight to certain skills.
