Ranger's Studied Enemies and Negative Wisdom Modifier

Post by Kenji » Sat Mar 28, 2020 7:18 am

For Rangers that have a negative base modifier on wisdom, they also have reduced Studied Enemies count.

To replicate this, choose a class that doesn't force 11 wisdom at start (fighter, rogue, etc.) and then multi-class into Ranger. Upon reaching 5 levels of Ranger, there will be no studied enemies slot available.

Please let us know if this was intended or not, as the original update notes in this link indicated that the intention was for the wis modifier bonus to kick in at level10, and a negative modifier would then do nothing.

It may seem a little bit cruel, but I would say it works as intended. You have the potential to have more Studied Enemies with a posative modifier, then it certainly makes to gain none with a negative modifier. Essentially, your Character has no mechanical or rp support to study more enemies as they lack the wisdom to do so.

Checking in on this bug report. The question came up again recently. Would a dev be able to confirm if this is a bug or working as intended? Thank you!

Who is the audience for this post?

That's a little bit cruel, yes. While I'm also a little bit cruel and I personally think that a Ranger with a negative WIS modifier should suffer some detrimental effect for that, the fact stands that the original phrasing of the update describes a purely additive effect. To clarify the original post, the maximum number of Favored Enemies a Ranger can have would be:

(Ranger Class levels / 5) + (An additional at Ranger levels 27 and 30) + (Positive WIS modifier, limited to 1/2/3 at Ranger levels 10/20/30)

Original Sep 18 2019 post linked, for quick reference:
The maximum number of studied enemies for Ranger is now Class Level / 5 + An additional at levels 27 and 30, + 1 for each wisdom mod for every 10 levels. (that is 1 additional if you have a wis mod of 1 at level 10, 2 additional if you have a wis mod of 2 at lvl 20).
For now, a fix is in the pipeline to make WIS modifier a purely additive effect, as the above bolded formula. IF it's later decided that a negative Wisdom modifier should reduce your available Favored Enemies, then it will be made so and clearly stated as such in Announcements.

Done.
