Epic Divine Champion (CoT) revisited

Post by Elaetheus » Thu Aug 09, 2018 5:17 pm

I'll try to keep it brief,

IC perspective: A mortal who devoted their life to being the militant manifestation of their deity, would not only learn to channel more and for longer, but would also find themselves capable to call upon their Power it more often, being at greater ease while in the stream.

OOC perspective: the recent (great) occult update showed us how being an epic palemaster is better as it is not limited to simply "more of the same". Epic Barbarian gains Thundering and Mighty rages, which, although being feats, drastically change the behaviour of rage (and even the 21 Barbarian build can have them both, see Cookie Cutters build for example). Even blackguards in epics get their minions promoted quite significantly (although IMO epic blackguard would also be a class to improve, but that's another story).

The epic CoT is a relatively unpopular choice, as it appears, especially after the kensai becoming legacy. Taking 20 levels of CoT seems unreasonable for the most part (blocks rogue dip, last bonus feat at CoT level 18). The DR and extra damage/saves, while noticeable, are following the principle of "more of the same" (and as mentioned, the full level 20 potential is not realised in most builds anymore).

I thus propose the following changes:

(0. Nothing to do with epic CoT: make Divine Wrath damage behave with two-handed weapons the same way as Divine Might does.)
1. Tie Divine Wrath/DR progression to each 4 levels in epic CoT (meaning 14 and 18 instead of 15 and 20). This way a 18-level CoT would be already an interesting path.
2. For each 4 levels in CoT class after 10, reduce Cooldown Time of Divine Wrath by 1 minute. An 18-level CoT would thus have it at one IG-hour, with roughly 1/3 of uptime. Compared to Barbarian's 1 turn cooldown this is still very mild.
3. At class level 18, make Divine Wrath give 1 bonus APR. This may be debatable but is a worthy prize for going full CoT, inspired by Barbarian's Thundering Rage (for which one does not even need to go epic barbarian). One could require that this feature works on non-kensai only (however maybe not --- after all, legacy kensai Thundering Rage barbarians seem to be a thing from what I read).

Any attention and commentary to this suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
