Right now, most PC builds that do not dedicate into ranged feats favor bows and slings over crossbows because of crossbow's inability to keep the APR unless the Rapid Reload feat is taken (most likely a wasted feat for those non-ranged builds)
I'd like to propose an item that is in the lore that can also fit in mechanically to contend with the available bows and slings somehow, or at least bridge the gap slightly.
Repeating Crossbow (Light Crossbow, Carpentry DC 40):
AB +2, mighty +4
Bonus Feat: Rapid Reload
No other bonuses are provided, this way, its main purpose is to be used as a secondary weapon for non-ranged builds, while never rivaling any of the top-tier Ashwood/Elite launchers.
It will also allow for more variety in terms of weapon usage, while its stats are on par to that of a composite longbow +2 (loot only). Slightly high carpentry DC also means that master carpenters will be able to monetize the craft and discourages the oversaturation of the crossbow.
Secondary Crossbow for non-ranged PC builds
