A lot of Questions.

Could the kind folks of our forums put down everything useful, resources, tips, troubleshooting? Try to keep it focused on just providing useful information, please.

What You Need To Know Beforehand:

Release Date of EE: Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition will be released on steam on March 27th, 2018. This release will be the launch of Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition and mark the beginning of Arelith's journey over.

Arelith Migration: When Arelith will fully migrate is a question that is often asked. Arelith is intended to migrate over as of March 27th, 2018 in the evening. This is provided that all migration goes smoothly and that we have everything in a workable state for all players.

What does this mean for me then?

This will mean that you will need to acquire a copy of Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition to continue playing the game, and on Arelith as all dedicated servers (minus Fixed Level) will be migrating over. You can purchase a copy of NWN: EE either through https://www.beamdog.com/ or via Steam when it is released there.

But there are two copies of the game? What one do I need?

There are two copies which is the NWN: EE and then the deluxe. To play on Arelith, you will only require the $19.99 USD version of the game. The deluxe edition offers premium modules; however, that is something for single player campaigns rather than Arelith.

What do I need to do before the release?

There are a few things that you will want to do before the official release to ensure a full migration of all 1.69 NWN characters are migrated to EE when release occurs.

1) Download either the steam version or the Beamdog client version of NWN: EE

Downloading from steam is simple. Purchase the game, download and it will be there. However, there have been many questions in regards to how to get the Beamdog client downloaded and where to find it:
  • To find the Beamdog client, visit: https://www.beamdog.com/
  • Make sure that you have already set up your Beamdog account to which you purchased the game.
  • At the bottom, click the download Beamdog client and follow the onscreen prompts to download the launcher.
  • Once downloaded, launch the client and log in with the credentials that you used to purchase the game (ie. your Beamdog account)
  • Find NWN: EE listed in the game list, and then download the game. If you are downloading before the official release, you will need to switch from English on the main game page on the client to English - Head Start to download the game.
  • Once installed, you are good to launch it from the client!
2) Link your NWN 1.69 CD Key to your EE for character / player name migration

A big thing to do is properly linking your CD key from NWN 1.69 to EE. And, I have received a lot of questions on how to properly do this as there may be some confusion from the instructions that Dunshine had presented.

Here are the steps:
  • From your NWN 1.69 Directory (so the current game of NWN you play), you will need to copy the file nwncdkey.ini
  • You will then need to locate your NWN EE directory to add this file to where their key is located. To do this, you will need to go into your Documents and then select the Neverwinter Nights folder. If the folder does not exist, you will need to launch NWN: EE for the first time to generate this.
  • Paste that document inside that folder and you should have both an nwncdkey.ini and a cdkey.ini file. See the attached image below:

  • You will then be able to log into EE with all your characters after the migration occurs by logging into each account to populate the vault.
  • Make sure you log into one character of each account to make it work smoothly for you. Otherwise you will run into CD KEY AUTHENTICATION ERRORS when trying to log into a character that belonged to a different account.
3) Make sure your Beamdog / Steam Client is up to date.

Arelith EE is currently running under version 8166. You will need to update to this to play on the server. So make sure you are always at the right version when joining the server.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: I keep getting a "Delete Character" message when creating a character and connecting:

A: You are receiving this because you are using a player name connected to 1.69 before migration. Once migration occurs, you will be able to login with that player name. For now, use a unique EE player name.

Q: What is the IP address for distant shores?

A: ee.arelith.com:5121

Q: Will there be a server wipe?

A: No. There will be no server wipe. The database and all characters will be migrated over to EE. You will have all characters there.

Q: What about my RPR and quarters?

A: This will be migrated over as well. RPR is tied to your CD Key. So long as you followed step 2 above, you will see it migrated over. Quarters will be moved over with the database and owned by the same people.

Q: Will I still have all my gold in the bank?

A: Yes. This is tied to database migration and will be available.

Q: How do I change my player name?

A: Locate the file, nwnplayer.ini in your directory for EE. Scroll down to Player Name=XXXX and delete whatever name is there. Leave it blank and it will prompt you on each login for a player name.

A: You don't have to do this before migration, can do it 1 year from now.

What do I do if I accidentally update EE past the version Arelith is using?

How do I prevent Steam from auto-updating EE before the server is using the new version?

So if we downloaded it, and migration has been moved back, I assume we just keep signing on with the old version.

You can play on the Distant Shore server for now if you want. 1.69 servers are still up and its fine to play there as long as they're up. Though the main servers can be migrated tomorrow or a week from now to EE.

If you accidentally update to a more recent version of EE, you will be stuck at that version. They do not have a revert option. However, Arelith will be updating fairly quickly to each new version to reduce the risk of this happening.

I'll have to look into how to stop EE from auto-updating on steam. I do not use the steam version myself.

Excellent guide.
From your NWN 1.69 Directory (so the current game of NWN you play), you will need to copy the file cdkey.ini
I think you meant to say copy nwncdkey.ini there. I didn't see a cdkey.ini in my 1.69 folder

Also, I noticed that I had to run NWN-EE first before getting the Neverwinter Nights folder in Documents. Just installing it didn't create it.

To avoid auto updating the steam game. Step 1: Library -> Right click game -> Properties -> Update tab. Select only update game when i launch it in the drop down.

Step 2: NEVER EVER launch the game through steam unless you want to update it. Use a shortcut to the game or one of the bat files in the link below.

Yes. That is correct. I was writing this in a hurry at work. But I’ll update it to make it more clear.

If you're running Linux the "cdkey.ini" file will be in "~/.local/share/Neverwinter Nights"

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere before.

I have two separate cdkey games now.
1. Can I load both of these cdkey files into the same EE file location per the instructions?
2. Above = "yes", I'm assuming all toons from both cdkeys can now be played?
3. Will there be a potential muling problem from toons from separate cdkeys now converged into the EE public key?

I've got the steam version, moved the old cdkey file into the folder with the EE cdkey file; used my old login name, but none of my characters pop up and if I make a new character, I get the "Delete Character" window. What is the next step?

I had a backed up copy of my CD key. (At least think it was the cd key I used as i no longer had NWN installed. Following these insructions to where to put my key didn't seem to work. I also don't remember my user account name.

Did this get a definitive answer?
