Horse riding gift

Post by livingNPC » Mon Mar 16, 2015 9:12 am

After having taken the gift, with the minor reward, you do you also have to invest points in riding?

Nope. I don't even think riding does anything on arelith.

Asked once to a horse rider (who already took the reward)

He told me there were none mechanical advantage but:

1. The fashion look. 8-)

2. The improved movement speed. The mount can justify a higher speed, so for travel purposes, the character player mounted can "run" avoiding be falling in the ridiculous of be tagged as "Forrest Gump" as he is visually mounting a steed.

So far, no bonus on AC, AB or Dmg

As for disadvantages, you get a delicious skill penalty to hide, move silently, and a pile of rogue skills.
-50 or something like that.

Gives you plenty of street cred, though. Much like helmets.

Or lack of helmets. I don't even know anymore.

The Ride skill DOES allow you to ride wyverns to various destinations in the UD, so it technically has a small mechanical use.

Cant say more than this, it should be FOIG

So, the ride skill doesn't give AC when mounted?

So near as I know, it does not. The notes on the wiki indicate that mounted combat has not been implemented at this date.

Just something to think about. Considering how rare it is that someone has a horse, is it worth taking the gift when you can't use it around many others due to out pacing them?

I considered taking it on my most recent character, but decided against it largely for this reason.

For a knigtly character of noble origin could be a great addition... or a grim dark rider with a scythe on a black steed could make a nice start for cool performances...

But ride is not being mechanically promoted as that is/was a lag resource (I don't know if the new server will allow to ride more without be increasing the lag deity)... So limited and discouraged.

In the other side of the coin, is not bad that mounts were not frecuent on an island of relative small size with not many plains. You can find geographical, climate and nature reasons, (also, in the main island of Arelith, there could be some plants venomous for the horses).

Exception: the Sibayadi horses, but those could be a exceptional strong race of steeds bound to their nomadic riders.

Arelithian maps also just don't make sense for ride. Look at all the hills, valleys, rivers, forests and mountains.

There is very little that is "flat." I have a hard time thinking of a single zone that does not have -any- form of elevation change, or isn't in a mountain.

Mithreas fixed horses (and the other additions of 1.69, like certain styles of tree, players of a certain age will still have 'nam flashbacks about that damn willow tree near Wharftown) causing lag quite some time ago, that isn't why horseriding is restricted any more.

Oh god, I recall that tree. I also recall the almighty spike of lag one would receive when they walked over the hill from the Swamps to Wharftown or vice versa.

The permanent speed bonus is kind of juicy for an arcane archer too.
