Requesting a small Misc starter item

I want to start with a journal from a past character upon arriving in Arelith. (the RP reason he has come to Arelith)

Should i ask a DM or just cheese it and make one when i get there and pretend i always had it?

I don’t think a DM is going to do that for you. This kind of thing is iffy at best. The only way to really do it is to cheese the journal. But, I would be careful that it does not give you any advantages in game with contacts and knowledge of in game happenings. I would try to keep things as organic as I can.

The journal would be about a life before arelith. so no context on arelith

Honestly it's probably easier for you to make it yourself very shortly after character creation. I doubt pcs will be charging at you yelling SHOW ME YOUR JOURNAL!!!

Just either find a book - weight reduce it - then fill your journal in that way. Or make a book via woodcrafting if you're willing to put a quick point in that.
If you're after a notebook that's trickier, but I'm sure there'll be a player shop selling one somewhere and again - you can probably make your own easily enough.
