Healer path question

Post by Duchess Says » Mon Jan 10, 2022 6:52 pm

I asked about this in the update thread but the question was buried.

Will current healer clerics will have the option to switch to a different path when those become available or will the new paths only be available for new clerics?

Also will domain change tokens be given out again at that time? Maybe they even should be now for current healers who want to take healing or suffering to keep overheal?

Asking selfishly as I have a healer low enough level to consider remaking but hoping that’s not necessary. Thank you.

Nothing is set in stone yet, but new paths will likely come in the form of bonus feats selectable at lower cleric levels. Whether an existing healer cleric has the path appended onto their hides or not shouldn't affect these feat choices.

What is of concern here are two scenarios of healer clerics and how their armor and weapon proficiencies may be affected.
Scenario 1: Cleric healer path taken at level 1 as the starting class
These clerics will likely have their proficiencies returned since the healer script aggressively removes any proficiencies that aren't simple on level up. Seeing that clerics have simple, light, medium, heavy, and shield proficiencies, these can easily be reimbursed to clerics that took the healer path at level 1.

Scenario 2: Cleric healer path taken as a 2nd or 3rd multiclass by utilizing -path command
These are trickier to deal with as the removed proficiencies from the initial base class aren't usually automatically reimbursed even as a character relevels and loses the healer cleric levels. Examples like Rogue or Monk at level 1, but healer cleric taken at level 4 will have their rogue or monk weapon proficiency removed. Since relevel doesn't drop a character below 1, the rogue or monk weapon proficiency doesn't get reimbursed.

When the healer path does get removed as a choice in character creation, I personally can't guarantee that all cases will be covered 100% to have their level 1 status restored.

But as a general rule of thumb, never roll a character just because of an update. Contact the builders in proper channels and see if there are ways to go about these balance changes or even find a better build than before rather than coming to the conclusion that there is no recourse whatsoever, certain outlier PM builds notwithstanding. (Rangers who took TWF at level 1 just for Invisible Blade can be a different matter, however, but even then, losing an FE at level 1 isn't as bad as most think.)

The mechanical changes shouldn't invalidate one's RP, and the only way it really does is when the players' minds deemed it so to themselves. This can simply be observed from those who took offense at the True Flame (Frost) OOC path name change.
