I started playing on this server some weeks ago
I made a character and chose one major gift (with increased ECL) and two minor gifts
I was concerned about too high an ECL
I was surprised to see my xp needed to level had not changed despite the increased ECL?
Is the ECL doing something different?

What the wiki page fails to mention, is that you get the same amount of experience points from Adventure XP, roleplay XP, writ quests, and fetch quests.
This effectively means that a higher ECL is of extremely little consequence in regards to Exp gain.
