Questions about Spellsword.

So I've not played in...well..quite some time. I have a kobold dexer dual Weild weaponmaster build I was working on...he's currently level 21.(but sitting at level one as he got reset when the new class came in.)

So two questions. Number one..whirlwind attack is now completely unavailable as a feat
I guess the powers that be thought wm and ss were a bad synergy..or too good.

Disappointing but ok.

Then I realized the only path of the new three that's suitable to a dexer is locked to elves only?

Whyyyyyy

He has no strength and doesn't use a two hander so the other two paths are no good to him.

Should I just roll him?

You don't need a path, DEX spellsword performs just fine without one since Bladedancer is mostly a flavor upgrade. In fact, without the path you can afford dual-wield feats, which will make your spellsword a lot more reliable.

I'd encourage you to give the class a spin for a few weeks before considering to roll. Initially there's been quite a few responses like yours, yet most people I've talked to ended up having a lot of fun with the new class in the end :)

Can I ask why Spellsword/weaponmaster was completely disallowed? Too powerful?

Essentially doing so let me give the class solid damage without enabling WM builds with broken damage :) WM scales extremely well with any weapon damage sources that can crit, so the Imbue Weapon damage would've needed to be lower across the board, and the only way to play a solid spellsword would likely have been with WM levels.

The inability to select Whirlwind Attack was a side effect of a workaround that was required to make Elemental Maelstrom happen. Essentially the feat is just reskinned whirlwind attack, and characters cannot select feats on levelup that their class will eventually grant them. You could still select it if you had a third class in your SS/WM build.

Right on, Ty for this info. I still think limiting one of their paths to a single race was a strange decision, but I'll keep on and see how he looks at 30

It's a lore thing. Bladesinging is an exclusively Elven tradition with sacred connotations (even though they're arcane practitioners), handed down to elves by Corellon himself. The teaching of it is carefully controlled.

Makes sense lore wise I suppose..but are there any other classes in the game locked to one race? It's a cool path but I'll literally never play a surface elf. Seems like a class path like that could have been named something else and the elves could just RP it that way. Giving one race exclusive access to a whole class is just. I dunno..

Arcane Archer

also it's not a class it's a specific path of a class that's elf-only

Good point. So elves have two exclusive subclass paths to every other races 0.

Interesting.

Earthkin defender is exclusively open to earthkin--dwarves, halflings, gnomes.
