How useful is taunt?

Post by Garrsi » Mon Oct 06, 2014 10:42 am

I'm working on a build at the moment, and I'm torn between taking either taunt or bluff. By the end this PC should have at least a decent AB (going by jack oats chart) despite not primarily being a meleer but I've heard good things about taunt.

I've never tried it myself but for those who have, how useful is it generally. Good for PvM, Good for PvP? Useless? Any thoughts are appreciated.

It's massively useful both for PvM and PvP.

I've found it to be incredibly useful for PvE, especially in adventuring parties.

Note: to taunt an enemy, you have to first disengage them.

This.

Taunt has the potential to lower a targets AC by six, this is huge. Very few characters pump concentration outside of casters so Taunt really shines in PvP. And with the new combat mode update Taunt does not throw you out of Expertise and the like. This makes it even more useful.

And in PvE situations, taunt works wonders for a party: the ability to, in effect, give your whole party +6 AB vs high AC enemies is very powerful.

Very useful. I'm taking cross-class ranks in it and enchanting my gear with it.
Some builds I've worked on (not recommended):
Charisma Battlecleric
"E-Dodge Brycer"

Taunt is fun. And hilarious to cap out on a bard. Bard Song + Curse Song + Taunt = pretty much no one in the party ever misses.

A cleric pushes 3 buttons and gives +12 AB to himself.

A bard pushes 3 buttons and gives +13 AB to the whole party.

With high enough skill Taunt also disrupts spell casting turning powerful mages into impotent meleers.

Isn't it a flat 30% failure? Favored Souls and Warlocks might not even be affected, if they're wearing the right gear.

True, but 30% to a wizard or sorcerer that doesn't have the feats to counter it is like a brick to the head.

Epic spells aren't considered arcane by the game engine and are not subject to spell failure. There are also quite a few nonsomatic spells.

This isn't to say that a 30% spell failure chance on a wizard/sorcerer is something to sneeze at. But an arcane spellcaster that's been taunted isn't necessarily helpless.

I love taunt so much it should probably get nerfed ;) KIDDING! Except for the taunt-love. That's serious.
