So currently there was a bit of a discovery on something that was long since thought vestigial for quarters.

As obvious as this seems, this enables someone without a key to be able to command/access a ship. So what this means is you can have a trusted group of core crew on a boat, dole out keys to randoms, and then the quarter owner can replace locks the next day. While it can cost a bit of gold this enables the same level of quality of life temporary boats enable.
