Increasing the survivability of Familars

Would it be possible to update the familars to improve their overall survivability?

The pushback from the pixie change is from frustration that familars are already incredibly underpowered and rarely useful.
Given that familars cannot survive any combat, the only useful pick was the pixie as a portable spell dispenser or door unlocker.
All other familars lack a reason to be picked and will die in seconds regardless of level, making them simply a burden.

I'm not asking them to be buffed for combat, quite the opposite, I am asking to have their survivability increased.
Ideally, I don't want familars taking part in combat and to only provide a defensive role for the caster.

My personal suggestion would be to have each familar offer a passive AOE effect and be unable to attack but I think that may be too much work.
