Loross on Language Award

Post by Flameo » Wed May 31, 2023 4:14 pm

I wanted to make a character who worships the Risen Sun and it would fit them as a holy character to have access to ancient texts from the era, and therefore I would love to spend an award on that but it isn't on the list

Hi there!

From a lore perspective, it isn't really common for everyday people to simply just have ancient texts from the Netheril empire, much less be able to actually read them. Loross itself is considered to be a dead language by 1372 DR, meaning that no one alive in the known 'world' (even scholars who've had the chance to study it) knew how to actually properly pronounce/speak it.

Netheril's fall left the enclaves in virtual ruin, and many of their ruins are extremely dangerous at that. Meaning, it isn't often that someone actually goes to one to seek artifacts.. and survives. Therefore, most people in the world of forgotten realms do not simply commonly know Loross or have even seen a textbook that may have somehow survived the apocalyptic fall of Netheril's enclaves.

In 1374DR, the shadovar enclave, Thultanthar, returned to the prime material and floats above the Anauroch desert. Canonically, the shadovar have begun to explore the realms again, including Arelith, however this is such a new development that Loross simply still isn't commonly learned. Right now, to put that in perspective, we're in 1379 DR... Only 5 years after. There simply hasn't been enough time for these wandering shadovar to spread their language far and wide.

This is why those of the Shadovar race or Loremasters are the only ones able to know the language. Because Shadovar actively still use the language, and it is alluded that the Loremaster whom learned it went to extraordinary lengths to learn the language... on top of having the intelligence to actually decipher/learn it. Perhaps they befriended a Shadovar? Perhaps they found some old forgotten lore gem which taught them the language. Perhaps they went spelunking in the depths of great libraries to find a single lost forgotten book which they spent years deciphering. There are many reasons you can come up with there.

If you'd like for your character to know the Loross tongue, I would suggest taking enough Loremaster levels that would give you the ability to speak the tongue fluently.
