Blades of Fire for Shaman (or love for melee shaman)

Post by Svrtr » Thu Apr 20, 2023 5:38 pm

So, I have gone over the problems of melee shaman in the thread below before:

viewtopic.php?f=37&t=39074&p=310582#p310582

It is old, has been returned to a couple of times, but never concretely. Compared to cleric, melee shaman has

-Worse AC
-Worse AB
-Worse damage (unless 2h then its roughly even but then EVEN WORSE AC and no offhand stat stick)
-Worse attack progression (0/-5/-10/-15/0 hasted assuming 4 barb levels pre epic vs cleric 0/-5/-10/0/-5)
-Fewer feats (23 bonus feat but no 26)
-No T3 dweomer (need 24 hard levels for the tier increase)
-A skill tax on perform with bard (the song of which is necessary to not be EVEN FURTHER behind cleric)
-Feat tax with trans which means no abj nor ad abj if you wan to get lesser risk to be dispelled
-A lack of damage or reason to go dual wield over barb as you have nothing like deafening clang that cleric gets or div favor to give enough damage to weapons to warrant going DW
-A narrower spike timer where cleric will be ~2 minutes with extended div favor where melee shaman barb bard is 1 minute song duration and 2d4+CON rage duration, which if on half orc, dwarf,or half giant is average 14 round
-The awkwardness of tower shield lowering song scaling so you need to try to awkwardly put shield away, song, then pull it back out to get max benefits while STILL having lower numbers than cleric
-The fact that even with less AC, because you've 2-4 more dodge AC than a non-charisma cleric you also LOSE more AC when flatfooted

etc etc etc

In my ideal world, blood frenzy would either lose its AC malus or reflex malus or both with high enough transmutation, or gain damage resistance to stack with stoneskin/premonition who themselves aren't blown away by a stiff breaching wind, and it would have more regen or vamp regen to make it more of a DI/DR/heatlh tank to cleric's AC tank, or that 2h was generally better and less squishy as this would indirectly benefit melee shaman (doubly so if by some miracle 2h is reworked in the basin so you can potentially get more stats on a 2h weapon than 1h to make up for the lost offhand stat stick), but that's neither here nor there.

In the simplest terms, ranger gets blades of fire. Blades of fire is quite nice. It benefits from transmutation and benefits volume of attacks over impact due to its flat damage nature. Ranger is (currently) the only divine caster to get it, where even SS gets it despite SS not suffering so.

Put simply, given how shaman is setup, and that melee shaman suffers a tad and dual wield shaman is basically a meme because it has no damage, I believe shaman should get blades of fire. Doubly so if blades of fire is given a -stream treatment
