Regarding Pickpockets and getting caught:

Post by Vylarah » Tue May 30, 2023 9:38 am

The Current System is a bit... unpleasant when dealing with pickpockets, and the recent uptick, especially for characters who don't keep high bank account numbers, yet get pickpocketed multiple times in a week.

The Current System:
1a) Palus Pickpocketer decides to Pickpocket from Sally Swashbuckler, from stealth. As it currently is, they might have to stand still for a moment or two, while hidden, before moving on, without having to interact with their mark, and get away with coin for free, which isn't a very 'fun' experience for the victim.

1b) Palus decides to steal from Sally, but this time, he gets 'caught' in the act, as he was spotted by someone with a high enough spot to notice the attempt. Palus can then immediately run away, while facing minimal blowback, because nobody has a chance to interact with him to show hostility, or attack, without breaking a server ruling, regarding hostile interactions with pickpocketers.

1c) Palus fumbles, and triggers a blade orb, paralyzing his character (or so I've heard they do, yet never seen one in action), causing him to be unable to escape, without using -pray. Sally would then have to have some sort of interaction with Palus, in order to adhere to the server rules, before she could act and possibly stop Palus from escaping. And while one line roleplay before hostility is 'acceptable' by the rules, it is hardly playing nice.

Potential Adjustments:
2a) When pickpocketing someone from stealth, force the stealther to leave stealth, or have severe penalties to the skill when stealing from players.

2b) If 'caught' by being spotted, have it be treated as a 'hostile' action, which switches the stance of anybody who saw the attempt, to 'hostile'.

2c) If a pickpocket triggers a blade orb, allow it to act as a default "!" for the map they're in, so everybody can interact with someone, knowing that they're a pickpocket.

P.S: All of these suggestions come from the same vein, in my personal opinion, and boil down to: Please treat Pickpocketing as a Hostile Player Character Interaction, and make the pickpocket have to actually speak to the target before they attempt their 'pvp', or please allow people to go back to attack any pickpockets that they catch in the act, because they sprint away if they get caught, not allowing for RP to take place (most of the time).
