No Cleric Left Behind (Pathless)

Post by Hazard » Fri Jun 09, 2023 11:12 am

The new cleric paths are great and open up a lot of avenues for upgrading into various cleric playstyles. From melee to casters to healers to support, it really has a way to upgrade into everything. Good update!

.. but, I do feel like pathless has sort of been left behind. Every path is a straight upgrade over pathless in one playstyle or another, making pathless just a cleric that isn't particularly good at anything, with the consolation prize of a few extra negligible points of AC over other paths (excluding Warpriest) and a pretty lack-luster melee bonus during divine power, which if you wanted to play that way you would have gone Warpriest anyway. On top of that, the paths tend to give feats to a very feat starved class which is appreciated, but again, pathless gets nothing and stays feat starved.

My suggestion for pathless is ..

To treat multi-classing and CL much how shaman does.

Each and any multiclass now provides more synergy CL for the first 2 levels, then switches to 1/3 CL per level at the 3rd level and beyond. Different multiclass will stack for the extra 1/3 CL calculation purposes.

Where a 27/3 (cleric/specialist or bard or warlock or whatever) would have 29 CL for example.

This would play into the 'versatility' role of pathless, where you haven't specialised into anything and so your default thing is improved (just clericing), as well as relieving some of the feat-starved-ness much like paths do, freeing pathless from having to take arcane defense (mandatory 2 feat tax, all casters are sort of forced into for disc).

That's my suggestion.
