Arelith Updates: What They *Really* Mean

Inspired by similar posts on Paradox Interactive's game-subreddits, I will be interpreting the most recent updates in an easily-digestible manner.

(please forgive me irongron)

Part One:
- New Reward Tier system; everyone who has rolled a character in the past week will find a coupon for a wellness and mental well-being at their nearest clinic.
- Revamped Gift System means that your desires of being a -2 Dex kobold by force can be realised; not that you have any choice
- Drow minmaxing removed
- Addition of hobgoblins finally mean that toilet humour gained five foot and a Lawful Evil alignment; Pepe the Hoblin expected within the week.
- No seriously someone please help kobolds
- It's all ogre now.
- Pixies now receive their diametrical opposite in the form of buffs to gnolls, and letting all three of them speak a language they've been exposed to for five generations.
- Puckish rogues, or "imps", have been added to facilitate "mischief", "silliness", and "war crimes" in the name of "Our Lord-Sovereign Asmodeus, May He Reign Eternal"
- Proto-Norse added as a language, at the persistent request of Hunter548

Part Two:

- Summon streams unlocking via books nukes Cordor elemental book market; GDP takes biggest hit in history.
- Paladins may no longer summon Balors without an inherent risk of "face devouring" as opposed to "he's, uh, a penitent of the b-blood war, h-haha"
- Cumulative XP lost and utterly wasted by trying to enchant them with weight reduction estimated to be in tens of millions

Summon/Ability/XP/Fear/Spell Updates

- Patch 1.70 released

Fighter Changes

- Is this a nerf? A buff? I don't even know any more. Who am I?

- Or, if there were a sympathy in choice,
War, death, or sickness did lay siege to it,
Making it momentary as a sound,
Swift as a shadow, short as any dream,

Blackguard Changes

- Brief as the lightning in the collied night;
That, in a spleen, unfolds both heaven and Earth,
And ere a man hath power to say “Behold!”
The jaws of darkness do devour it up.
So quick bright things come to confusion.

Shadowdancer Changes

- rutger

Wiz/Sorc Changes

- Infinicasters slowly being merged with regular casters. Jack Vance's grave-spinning reported to be nearing perpetual motion levels.

Favoured Souls & Weave Masters

- The Culling has begun.

Totems

- LOW LEVEL TOTEM DRUIDS SUMMON PUPPIES AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Warlocks

- Cooldowns adjusted to actually make sense.

General Changes

- Natural Spell feat removed

Part Three:

- Adjustments to some races;
- Inherent ugliness of duergar considered a balance to disease and paralysis being terrified of their beards.
- Oh thank god someone helped kobolds
- Goblins changed to -10 RPB
- Aasimar considered on-par with tieflings despite being objectively more beautiful in every way; clearly as a result of secretly being a 10,000 year old angel.
- Mutant midgets no longer considered for eugenics programs; embraced
- Imps, like snakes, may shed their skins. I think.
- Hoblins have lost the fine motor skills and exquisite eye for pottery and watercolours that the race is known for, in favour of smashing shit

- Gifts
- Gift of Holy/Unholy now on-par with being a Cleric, apart from that whole "Implosion" thing
- Drow Minmaxing added back in

- Classes
- Kensai powercreep slowly increasing with every update, CONSPIRACY??? S T A Y W O K E
- Blood purity now no longer a consideration with halflings and red dragons.
- Yes, I did just liken high role-play bonuses to having purer blood

Aren't kobolds and goblins on par statistically now? Is there inequality in negatives?

And depending on those answers....why -1 ecl for gobbos and not kobbos?

Goblins get minus two to their Charisma score. Kobolds do not.

My elemental-book-selling character's bank account is in seven digit territory. I feel like one of those hedge fund managers that made it out rich just before the 2008 crash.

In other news:
Ugolo the level 3 Humility Warlock goblin is farming Driders for near 200exp each.

Kobolds get 'easy' (if you know where the NPC is, I presume) access to one of the best PRCs in the game, which became open to 20 RPR players at the same time as the adjustment was made. I presume this was the rationale behind giving Goblins some love with ECL.

Now, with the weather:
Cordor is looking heretical as ever, while in the Underdark we can see a shadow looming of a new swarm of goblins with gift of humility, expecting to reach 30 by the end of the month.

Appropriately said by Memelord.
Dragon Disciples are a laughably weak class.

With the update, there's reason to collect all the books though, since you can now switch summons on the fly. Also, they can't be copied anymore; counterfeit books have been completely removed from the market.

Surely, this is a net positive for book dealers?

My team of lawyers has extensively analyzed your argument for any error, regardless how marginal it could be, but they've found it to be... completely flawless and within the lines of logical reasoning that are acceptable for me to accept. I concede.

Was what I was thinking too when I spotted the -1 ecl at goblins... lol i fail to see the reason why they need that.

Let me tell you about Nerei Utlan's business model.

Elemental books are fairly easy to find on shelves. The issue was that each one weighed 6 lbs, which is a hefty burden for wizards, sorcerers, or pretty much any caster with STR as a dump stat. Naturally, de-weighted elemental books were in high demand.

De-weighting a book cost 1k gp (a little less with enchantment focii), but each attempt had only a 5% chance of succeeding. Finding a lot of books for such attempts was also quite a pain.

So if a mage saw those de-wieghted elemental books available at a store for, say, 5k gp each? It's no brainer - better to just buy it rather than shell out gold and XP and likely end up with a self-enchanted book costing far, far more than 5k.

But wouldn't it be a loss for my character to enchant those books and sell them at 5k a pop? Yes, it would - if she was a sucker that tried to enchant them herself. Instead, we've got this handy-dandy device called the printing press. She never did any enchantment herself; instead she bought one de-weighted elemental book of each type off of others, did print runs, and sold the mass-printed copies.

The end result was that 2 Soft Lumber + 1 Iron Ore + 1 Harnak + 5 Crafting Points = 5k gold minus taxes. Elemental books for the masses; goes well with the Model T in your garage. I had trouble keeping the shelves stocked.

I'm fine with the change, though. Delving into dangerous dungeons for esoteric lore seems thematically appropriate. And the obsolescence of this business model gives my character a reason to get creative and find some other way of stocking her shelves.

This is actually part of a plan by the balance team to buff DC spells.

We're hoping that hordes of GoH goblins swarming around the server will make necromancers great again by populating areas with vast quantities of swarming, but mechanically subpar PCs. This should restore Wail to status as a respectable tool for the discerning wizard, and enable us to finally eclipse the Swiftian genocide with one of greater magnitude.

Patch 15/02/2017

- Erinyes and Boatmen should really ask themselves if what they're wearing is acceptable attire, I mean, look, have you seen their outfits? They're really just asking for trouble
- Dragons, those colossal beasts of nigh-infinite power will now actually hang around long enough to be more than just nice statuary
- Polished their claws, too
- The innate elemental resistances of planetouched are now a little more potent and deserving of that ECL boost, and not made obsolete by the simplest of alchemical essences

You will now be able to cross the Bendir Dale River by ferry. With a lot of EXP loss. And if your persuade is high enough for the ferrymen. And if you bring the ferry. Unless I misunderstood.

This sounds like the start of a bad joke.

Three characters walk around followed by 9 mummies.
The first character asks, "are you my mummy?"
The second character shrieks and swoons, being a Christopher Eccleston fangirl.
The third character scratches his head uncertain, not understanding the reference.
All three characters are then fed cookies and really good chicken noodle soup by the 9 mummies.
