ADJECTIVALS/DEMONYMS OF ARELITH!
As you all know I do a lot of the language tweaking and am currently involved in an insane and unnecessary fluffing project with languages to make them look nice. Language tends to create words and show things of how they belong to something - cities, countries, lands, clans, religions - known as demonyms and adjectivals.
Rather than doing this as a poll I am going to kinda use this to gauge what people use and tested against my suggested / preferred ones to see what stands out. Ultimately the Gronlord will decide on anything concrete.
Proto-types:
Arelith = Arelithian
Andunor = Andunorian
Cordor = Cordorian
Bendir = Bendirian
Benwick = Benwicker
Brogendenstein = Brogendensteiner
Guldorand = Guldorander
Kholingen = Kholinger
Minmir = Minmirian
Myon = Myonian
Sencliff = Sencliffer
Sibayad = Sibayadi
Skal = Skalingar
Skaljard = Skaljardar
Udos Drox'un = Udos Drox'unan
Urblexis Grond = Urblexis Gronder
Wharftown = Wharftowner
Zanshibon = Zanshibonian
Arelith, Bendir, Minmir, and Myon are all elven names.
----
So all I am asking is - what words do you guys use as demonyms for these things. If I have left some place out that has or HAD some significance to our setting let me know and I may add it to the list. Have fun.

I've always seen Udossian used, myself.

Udossian, aka We-ian.
Re: ADJECTIVALS/DEMONYMS OF ARELITH!
I always saw Myon's demonym as Myon. Like how the plural of a sheep is sheep. I think thats also how most use it too.
Re: ADJECTIVALS/DEMONYMS OF ARELITH!
I'd use "Those in <city name>", "Citizens of <city name>" as a human, and would likely use "Those who dwell in <cityname>", "dwellers of <cityname>" as a monster. Never felt a need to use a single word for those.
One thing is that as a monster character I almost never feel the need to group people by their city. It is a <racename>, "sunlander", and so on. Past that point it depends on how exactly this monster's speech pattern is warped. "sunlander" can becomee "those living in the world above", "lowerdark" can become "darkness below" and so on.

The only difference in the above I've used/seen used is "Andunori" for inhabitants of Andunor.

I've seen Myon as Myonese, and really, no, please use Myonite instead or Myonian
Biz here was a constant subliminal hum, and death the accepted punishment for laziness, carelessness, lack of grace, the failure to heed the demands of an intricate protocol.

I like Myonese.

Guldorand = Guldorandi
Skaljard = Skaljardian
Udos Drox'un = Udossian
These are pretty much the ones that I use that are different from the listed ones.

You need the Dark in order to show the Light.

My only tweak on your list is that I use "Guldorandi".

Re: ADJECTIVALS/DEMONYMS OF ARELITH!
I've always used Skaljardian, and I've never heard it said any other way.

Slightly a twist of the topic, but I've always disliked the term "Skaldark". Nowehere in the Forgotten Realms is the Underdark named after its upstairs counterpart. We don't call it Arelithdark, nor people say Amndark, Cormanthordark, and so on. Hence why Skaldark makes no sense.

I don't think there should be a consensus on this. Different cultural backgrounds / races might use different versions and that's cool and makes the world feel more real imo.
You've done it [Garrbear], you've kicked the winemom nest. -Redacted
Re: ADJECTIVALS/DEMONYMS OF ARELITH!
I know for a fact a few years ago it was Skaljardr, and I like it. Very norse themed. Skaljardar is fine too.
Re: ADJECTIVALS/DEMONYMS OF ARELITH!
This is not to disregard other people's words - but there are set words for things in any setting and people are free to make their own things for anything.garrbear758 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 01, 2022 2:55 amI don't think there should be a consensus on this. This is mostly to see whats popular, see what Irongron approves of - so I can add them to every single language so you don't have to brackets things.
To write Cordorian you have to go [Cordor]ian or whatever in most languages.
I will be doing similar for...
Every single deity.
Every single landmass and nation I can find that you might reasonably talk about in the setting. Etc.

Make both Skaljardian and Skaljardr official, where the former is from outsiders and mainlanders and the latter is from the natives or people from Icewind Dale

Re: ADJECTIVALS/DEMONYMS OF ARELITH!
Brogendenstein is usually just "Dwarves" commonly, i dont think one goes up the mountain to visit the Brogendensteiners, or Broggers, I think given the structure and racial focus of the place it's unique for this particular topic. (We do openly protest 'Brog')

Re: ADJECTIVALS/DEMONYMS OF ARELITH!
Most of them seem fine to me with some notes:
Benwicker makes me think of baskets.
I think I've seen people most often use Udossian, but I think this might be because people (most? some?) probably don't know the direct translation is We Survive.
I'm not able to log in right now but I wonder what 'Survivor' translates to in xanalress. If it has a good ring it might fit very well, and simultaneously have multiple meanings.

So we're very much on track.

Re: ADJECTIVALS/DEMONYMS OF ARELITH!
I've most commonly seen people from Bendir refered to as degenerates.
Re: ADJECTIVALS/DEMONYMS OF ARELITH!
"Bendir" by itself appears to be both the adjective and the noun.
Re: ADJECTIVALS/DEMONYMS OF ARELITH!
Benwick was always Benwickian. Benwickian Knights, Benwickian citizens, etc.
Bendir has been Bendiran also.
Minmir as Minmiran.
Wharftown was Wharftowners, otherwise known as "rolled." But it's not on the list at present.
