Re: Back in my day ...
Back in my day druids would take dragonshape and become untouchable gods.
The Nomad was INSIDE the city gates, and outside them was the farmlands, bramble and SUNITE CARAVAN PARK <3
Surfacers and Underdarkers were autohostile and going too close to enemy settlements would trigger a killscript that just kills your character.
Death penalty was a few days worth of XP.
Circle grinding frost giants above Brog was your life from level 18 until 30.
Don't level too fast, or let a DM catch you running instead of walking (even if you are the ONLY PLAYER ONLINE), or they will dock XP/levels (ouch, found out the hard way a few times).
You had to apply for a PrC token for Weapon Master, and when denied because of above mentioned running, too bad. Embrace life as a pure vanilla NWN fighter (no modern perks).
All characters could take THREE major gifts, and one of them was +32 SPELL RESISTANCE. I wonder if some of these are still around.
There were characters who were actual dragons, with wings, tails, claws, horns and permanent true seeing/spell resistance.
You would actually get put in (and left in) jail when arrested in Cordor. Occasionally guard players would come to check on you and RP with you. It was really, really awesome and I miss it.
There was a whole settlement just for paladins and goody-two-shoes types.
Anyone could roll up Weavemasters. They're like sorcerers but all spells are infinite spells. I always kick myself for not rolling one up just to keep in my vault.

Back in my day...
...You used a portal rod to get around
...Sitting outside the front of the Nomad with a little paper sign saying "looking for adventure" was how you got a party to go into dungeon
...If you wanted to join Light Keep you had to stand in the pillar of light behind the altar which you could ONLY tell the truth inside of
...A half dragon with red wings ruled Myon (you all know exactly who I mean)
...God's forbid you walk around Cordor with a weapon out or the Guard WILL stop you
...Epic Enchanters were more popular than hotdogs at a BBQ and the only way to get high end gear
...Having a full set of +3 Adamantine gear felt like an achievement
...Every single PrC class needed a PrC token from a DM's approval
...Travel was revolutionised the day when you could catch a caravan, to then wait for the correct Hour to come around and then sit through a little cut scene as it went along

Mmm.
I am now remembering the settlement war system.
I remember when Guldorand was a vassal of Bendir.

Re: Back in my day ...
Back in my day true strike was cheap to bottle and I could give hundreds to the Tyrant of Grond in return for murdering whomever I wanted.
Back in my day you could spam scry by resting in an inn repeatedly and scrying the same person over and over again, gaining juicy info
Back in my day drow all lived separate from other races
Back in my day , on april fools day we all died and when we did, returned as a zombie and proceeded to kill our friends, turning them into zombies... fun times.

Re: Back in my day ...
Back in my day, adamantine had a counterpart; Platinum.
Also in my day, every failed attempt in the enchanting basin lost your character experience.
(As others have noted, getting to level 30 on a dedicated character took around a year. And gold was just as scarce.)
And finally.. Back in my day, Nobody used the forums. (But do they now?)

Back in my day you could get to the character creation area by going through a tunnel under Bendir.

Back in My Day...
You got very strong reactions if you mentioned Skype Sparkle Chat. Discord is just less exclusive.
You could lose XP from the Weatherstone.
You could attack Death and lose XP.
You could enchant arrows to become ridiculously powerful through a now-closed exploit.
The Astrolabe was still being made.
WHARFTOWN EXISTED AS A THREAT.
The Dark Agency Act was loved by many and hated by many.
Eleven Banites backed off from a level 9 monk thinking she was Epic.
Banites were Highwaymen on the Trade Road north of Cordor.
The Abyssalists were the Big Baddies for years. Hin Sandwiches anyone?
Bendir was protected by an nearly mute Earth Genasi named Ohm and everyone loved his miming roleplay, but...
Mimes were illegal and it was supposedly ban-worthy. Toss them in the scorpion pit!
If you flipped off the Sky, DM Talos would send lightning down. This was repeatedly tested.

Re: Back in my day ...
Oh my god. I totally forgot about that.
Re: Back in my day ...
Back in my day, friendships and rivalries were formed in GameSpy chat. They had to be - because there was only one server, it had a 64 player cap, and it was always full!
Back in my day, days turned into weeks turned into months waiting for my weapon master PRC token that never showed up.
Back in my day, many hours were spent waiting for the caravan in Wharftown or Bendir to take me back to Cordor. It was too dangerous to walk back to the city alone, and if I ran, well, the DMs would drag me out back and put an arrow through my knee.
Back in my day, the underdark forums, lmao.

Back in my day, 5% roll was made in MSN messenger with Mithreas, by choosing a number between 1-20.
Re: Back in my day ...
Back in my day, wild elf was free, and writs are repeatable. I remember the goblin fortress gets raided many times.
The leveling was so hard, I never made it past Cordor on my first character, only coming back years later, feeling so much better and leveled.
I missed when writs give double xp for 1st completion
I missed when quests has no level cap (pls remove it pls, it helps weak rp builds to get some easy Xp)

Back in my day,
it was like 6 zones to go from Myon to Cordor
Talior was Councilor of Cordor through our collective will, not settlement mechanics
1 million gold was considered obscene and absurd
gamespy chat was our place of culture

Back in my day, the Cordor arena was split in half and was basically two separate guild houses for guards and gladiators RP.

Famous last quote "I can dodge lightning" ... My character couldn't.. There were some serious prank-DMs and I loved them so much.triaddraykin wrote: ↑Fri Jun 10, 2022 11:46 pmIf you flipped off the Sky, DM Talos would send lightning down. This was repeatedly tested.

Back in my day, you could start in Cordor as a svirfneblin.
what would fred rogers do?
Re: Back in my day ...
Back in my day, you had to use a gift slot to take your subrace traits. (After gifts were added. I remember before gifts)
Udos Dro'xun got hit by an event which destroyed bridges and you had to go through lowbie dungeons to get to some parts of the city. Also accessing the Temple had a weird climb check that no cleric could make b/c climb was tied to martial classes innately.
Favored Soul was a weird bard-esque subtype class that could raise the dead with the radial menu. If you had PM levels you could death touch with one hand and raise touch on the other, heh.
Heavy armor slowed you down, oof.
Auto-hostile between UD and Surface. Interesting coordination to turn off the hostile before an errant summon made things violent if you wanted a non-killy encounter.
No writs or Adventure XP drip.
V A N I L L A NWN appearances. Thank heavens for NWN Sync.

Truly have loved this thread. Keep em coming.
Re: Back in my day ...
I played VERY VERY briefly back in 2004 before 'The Split'...
So back in my day,
You could play a faerie or tiefling or aasimar for free, no questions asked.
The Nomad was inside of Cordor, with inside the gate area being more of a street than anything resembling a 'square'.
Banites. Everywhere. Just walking around. 10 year old me had no idea what Bane was.

Oh also, everyone started at RPR 0. Which means unless you had MoD, each tick gave you no experience points. None.
