The Road to Ruin -- Gol'garoth

The Inferno

The sudden jolt of healing magics pulled him harshly back into focus. Gone was the fearsome foe who'd stood before him -- in its place hovered a set of glowing purple eyes, emitting from a small, blurry figure. It spoke with a taunting sense of triumph in its tone.

"You owe me."

His vision focused on the gnomish figure as she moved on to tend to the others -- healing wounds, calling back the dead, conspiring with those who remained on their feet. His pride as wounded as his body, he stole that brief moment of peace to survey his surroundings rather than contest her claim.

Ash rained down from the black sky. The distinct smell of seared flesh filled the air. The mangled corpses of allies and enemies laid strewn haphazardly about the alien landscape they'd found themselves in. Arcane fire had scorched the ground around them, leaving little unscarred. His world was one of chaos, pain, and confusion. Each movement was met with protest from his muscles -- his entire form calling out for rest. To remain laying upon that burned, dark earth. To give in to sleep and wake anew -- cleansed of the fury this battle had brought.

Then an inhuman shriek sounded out from the direction they'd come, piercing the fantasy of peace.

He took up his great hooked blade and drove it into the ashen dirt, fighting his way back upright. Forsaking the protest of his body, unheeding of the warnings that he had already pushed himself too far. He took one step, then another, dragging his weapon along behind him. He took his place in the battle-line with the others, ready to stand his ground to the bitter last.

Not out of a sense of brotherhood.
Not in duty or service.
Not to save a single life,
Nor stop a single foe.

He stood among them only because he could not imagine a world in which the war-horn was sounded, and he chose not to answer.
And so he drew a deep breath into his lungs, set his gaze to the approaching enemy, and poured his entire burning soul into a hateful, hungry warcry.

This is all there was.
This is all there would ever be.
Until he was no more.
