Akorae: Painful Truths

Post by Eira » Mon Jan 20, 2020 9:36 am

“Well, yeah, they must have all gotten lost. I mean- you wouldn’t just ignore messages from me, right?” A faint pause, the dark elf’s amber gaze drifting over to the other with his silvered hair and bleak expression. She swallowed, her voice growing small. “You… wouldn’t, right?”

“There must have been some reason he saved me. Why he’s been letting me hunt with him. It couldn’t just be a coincidence.” She dangled bare feet over the edge of the dock, watching the lack-eyed fish drifting about in the cool light of the lanterns. “It’s not possible; no one could be that unfeeling.”

Her eyes flicked down and away from her companion, lips curving down beneath her mask. “At least, I think so.”

“I knew I had gotten stronger!” the dark elf proclaimed as she moved away from the center of the arena. Plopping herself down against a pillar, she watched as the others moved to begin their match. A few heartbeats passed, watching, before her brows drew together in confusion.

“Did… she go easy on me?”

They stumbled back into the cave, her eyes watering and a burning aching pain shooting through her skull. She leaned against a boulder before yanking her gauntlets off to rub at her eyes between blinking them furiously.

“Vith, vith, vith,” the dark elf whispered to herself.

“Sorry,” the other said. “I forgot that the sun was up.”

“Where is he?”

She paced back and forth in the sand, eyes scanning the wind-beaten stone walls as if the one she waited for would just appear. With a deep huff, she finally settled on a bench, a foot drumming the ground impatiently.

“Does he not want to teach me anymore?”

The sun inched ever-nearer to the horizon, and his pointed mentions of drow became more frequent. She said nothing, of course, hoping that perhaps they would make it out of the desert before-

The searing light shone only a moment, burning her eyes before she called upon the blessed cool darkness to shield her from the painful rays.

“See?” he said to the others. “That’s a drow right there. She’s a drow!”

“I don’t know, I don’t know anything.”

“And that hurts, doesn’t it?” the other asked. “Uncertainty.”

“…Yes.”

“They don’t like us Surfacers for a reason,” he said.

Her voice was hesitant a moment, the dark elf all-too-aware of the helm concealing her face. The color of her hair, her skin.

“Well, we should probably avoid where Underdarkers are going,” she finally replied.

“Life is not something you can easily throw around.”

She glanced around blearily, taking in her surroundings before glancing up to the other. “I… know that,” she muttered, struggling to stand.

“Clearly you don’t.”

“And when I find a puzzle. I seek to solve it,” the other said. Casually. Comfortably.

She blinked, uncertainty threatening to color her voice. Her gaze flickered down to focus on the glass of wine in her hand.

Some puzzles can’t be solved, she wanted to say.

But she did not.

He spoke to her, and she was taken aback, trying very hard not to smile, trying very hard not to be vulnerable. But even so, her voice was small- pitiful, even -as she replied, "you are the first person to ever tell me they are proud."

And I fear you are will be the last, she did not say.

Time passed as she slowly whittled away, flakes of wood drifting down to settle curling on the floor. Her thumb rubbed across the engraving, a moment taken to marvel at the delicacy of the work. Her own work.

"I hate it here."

The two spoke and spoke. Hours turned to cycles, the shifting of day to night, and back again. Visitors came and left, sometimes lingering, never for as long as the pair sitting together. And yet their words rarely stilled; never were they lost for how to continue on with the conversation.

As she spoke, and in turn listened, the dark elf grew more comfortable, more relaxed. And at the same time, more worried. She could not trust the other. That was dangerous. Foolish.

And yet- the thought lingered in her mind.

I do not want to kill this one anymore.

She felt the bones shatter beneath the quick flurry of strikes, the dark elf hardly able to pull back before she stared at the other laying on the floor, limbs bent oddly askew.

"You're not that type of person."

She stared up at him, feeling the conviction reflected in her voice, hoping that perhaps he'd finally see- "I could be."

"You neither want to be, nor could you."

And just like that, the conviction fell away.

He was right, of course.

"And what of the drow?"

The dark elf's breath was sharp, her helm- concealing before, now only feeling smothering. She tensed as the other spoke behind her.

"You can have her."

"Good."

She would have turned- to do something, to protest, her hand already on the lense but the leyline was lost to her. But the elf was close. Too close. Magic swirling around them- sword aglow.

And so she ran.

"He's a kid, what do you expect? He's the same as you, does things, thinks later."

Her voice turned sullen, gaze fixed on the fire as she huddled in the sand. "It's not as if we had anyone to teach us better."

And the unspoken: It's not as if I had you to teach me better.

He spoke and she stiffened in place, her gaze finding the floor briefly. What he said was true; she couldn't deny it out of anything but pure spite and stubbornness. Perhaps if he had tried to kill her, she could have defended herself- fought or run, anything to get anywhere but there.

But words were worse.

Words cut deeper than any spell.

And they trapped her.

"Oh, have I stung you?" The question alone could have almost been mistaken for true concern from any other but the one delivering it, with a masked sneer and simmering disgust. "Pitiful thing."

"No." Her voice leaped from her, quick and a bit too loud. The word thrown out as if to weaken his own, as if it could do anything.

"You make me ill to look at. And you are a worse liar than I."

"Well, we're not in the Underdark right now."

The dark elf could have almost laughed at that. Perhaps when she first came to the city she would have agreed with him. That the Underdark was only the name of a place. That any of them could just leave whenever and go wherever and forget it. Leave it all behind. All of them behind.

"True," she agreed. For it was true. They were in as opposite a place of the Dark as one could get. Physically, at least. But for them both... it did not matter the place. For the deep depths lingered in hearts and minds and the scars on body and soul. "But one must always return."

"You can look at me if you would like to."

The dark elf nearly quailed under the other's gaze, a look in his eyes she hadn't expected. She should have.

"I thought-" she continued, forcing a laugh past the lump in her throat, "that you wouldn't because of my scars." Her voice was light, though she could feel her marred face twist and tug with every word. Every reminder.

His voice turned firm. "Never."

"...because I have decided to leave Andunor and-"

But whatever he went on to say was lost to her as she just stared at him, frozen.

But you can't leave, the dark elf wanted to say. You can't leave me.
