Sorcerers Tome

Post by Almaria » Sat Jan 09, 2021 12:08 pm

*Infront of you is a large jewelled leather bound tome, the book looks aged and the once intact clasp that seals the book with a tiny jewelled skull is broken. the pages are filled with countless entries documenting encounters and experiences that a young Sorcerer has gone through backdating for some time. The tome itself holds no power and would be of little monetary value, however it is filled with details about a number of spells the Sorcerer has learned over the years. The book will have been used as a journal and point of reference only. The tome is more than likely carried on the Sorcerer's person for the time being but would prove invaluable to young innate casters.*

*The first few spells are simple enough, as the Sorcerer begins to find his feet and familiarize himself with his gift, the spells on the following pages are basic and any caster given enough time could master them with ease*

*The young Sorcerer arrives at Andunor, certain privileges would be afforded to him as a Drow, however he knows all too well weakness would not be celebrated, following a brief visit to the Hub to barter and stock up on healing kits and travelling supplies. The Sorcerer stood in the East Wheel rummaging through his pack he places the vials and healing kits purchased in appropriate compartments. The Sorcerer removed a small pouch of nuts and he began eating away. Overhearing of work for coin, the Sorcerer was shortly joined by a young Human female, she was respectful to the Drow Sorcerer and offered her services with the purpose of growing stronger that she may better serve her “Master”. A suitable purpose. The young Sorcerer produced a small leather pouch from his pack and removed a tightly rolled cigarette. The Sorcerer lit the cigarette and began taking several drags, blowing the smoke in the opposite direction from the young woman.

After some time conversing, this chance encounter the pair found themselves venturing in the local sewers neither cared for the smell of stench of rot and decay. When faced with creatures below this was the great equaliser. The Sorcerer was curious, this Master she served was obviously very precious to her. She was slender, cheeky and obviously accustomed to physical combat. The woman was eager for adventure as they entered another part of the sewers there stood quarter of a dozen sewer creatures over the young woman. The pair fought there way through with more ease than if they had gone it alone. He contemplated experimenting his manipulations on the young woman however he quickly decided he was too weak at this time.

The woman presented that she was more than capable of handling herself. The young Sorcerer cast what limited protective enchantments on the woman he could. The Sorcerer watched amazed as she faired significantly better following enchantments and quickly realised for his own survivability he would need to consider companionship at this time.

Negative Energy Ray - The young Sorcerer looked on as she found herself surrounded by Sewer creatures. She was being overrun and immediately his prospects of escape alone rushed through his mind. The Sorcerer had manipulated negative energy before when he was angry or frightened, he had not yet mastered creating the energy at will however this time was different. With the rush of adrenaline, the Sorcerer closed his eyes quickly and began an incantation, he gathered a small amount of dark energies surrounding him into the palm of his hands. He directed the energy into a ray towards one of the creatures, immediately the creature fell and as their numbers thinned the pair were able to emerge victorious.

The young Sorcerer received praise from the Human woman. The Sorcerer stood amazed, yet felt some essence leave him as he directed the ray of negative energy. The Sorcerer took a mental note of the experience and gathered himself. The Sorcerer and the young woman ventured back to the hub, he needed time to reflect on what had occurred that day. The rush of manipulating the dark energy.

*The next spells, although to most experienced casters would not be impressive, to the young Sorcerer his powers were growing and he was moving beyond that of simple cantrips. He had a long way to go in his quest for power, but he is learning quickly and channeling his gift as best he can.*

Ghouls Touch

*The Sorcerer, made it back to the hub, his next venture would see him clear a local cavern, it took him longer than usual dispite dropping a few of the items he was carrying from clearing the sewers to lighten his load, he spent the night making preparations and in the morning he visited the various merchants and handed over the items he had acquired, he had barely enough gold pieces to gather supplies and equipment to ensure was prepared for another journey.

He waited a couple of days to regain his strength and gather what he needed to venture to the cavern not knowing what the day would hold for him. His intentions were pure yet perhaps misguided, all he seeked was knowledge and power, to prove to himself more than anyone that there was purpose to his existence.

Travelling through the city where possible assuming that was the safest route. He encountered various ambushes from creatures within the cavern, he was able to use his Negative Energy Ray to hold the goblins off. As the young Sorcerer persisted slightly deeper into the cavern he was almost depleted of arcane energies.

Suddenly he heard a gathering of creatures perhaps attracted to those he had already bested a large creature, charged towards the Sorcerer, who immediately fired a ray of negative energy towards the creature. Although injured the creature continued towards the Sorcerer. The Sorcerer using what distancing tactics he could was able to evade all by one of the creatures who struck the Sorcerer, he cried out in pain and fell to the ground.

The creature circles the young Sorcerer, as he anticipates a fatal next blow... 'Stop!' the Sorcerer cries. The young Sorcerer, reaches out his none injured hand and grabs the creature. Energy escapes from the Sorcerer and the creature freezes stiff as a corpse. While the creature is paralyzed, he staggers to his feet and flees from the cave while he has the chance.

The young Sorcerer is not sure exactly how he did what he did, but has little time to think on it. He pauses for a moment, after staggering due to blood loss for a fair distance, he rips his robe and ties it around his shoulder wound applying pressure and then continues running, retreating to the safety of the city.

Negative Energy Burst

*The young Sorcerer had spent some time now exploring different outlying areas during his travels including significant time within the Bonefields caverns. He had quite the collection of bones, knuckles and skulls which had taken his interest. Most alarming he had taken note that his negative energy had quite the opposite desired affect on the undead, regenerating and at times enhancing them.

This day he had found himself in the Flood Plains, a small humanoid speaks in draconic offering his aid as the Sorcerer once again finds himself limited in isolation, evidently a learned scholar however to his side was what appeared to be a horde of undead zombie companions. The loyalty of the undead companions was unlike anything he had seen before, and the Kobald was able to direct them into battle. The undead warriors stood in a defensive stance holding swords tightly, standing between the hostile creatures and the casters.

The caster with undead companions said very little. The young Sorcerer describes a journey through the Flood Plains, several encounters with creatures are noted however one of particular interest. The pair were set upon by enemies, the caster had repeatedly summoned undead companions to replace the last as it fell. Each time the caster had channelled powers through his left arm that was concealed. The group were scattered and divided, the Sorcerer had maintained close proximity to the caster. Both were limited with healing supplies, They had exhausted the majority of her spell arsenal. The Undead were engaged in battle with a large group of creatures, this battle was more intense and pounds of flesh were torn off the Zombies as they battled on. The young Sorcerer looked between Undead and the hostile creatures mentally unsure of whether to direct his energy towards regenerating the Undead or as an offensive spell at the creatures.

Torn between the two he lets out a massive cry and appears to channel much of the negative energy that was in the air resulting from both casters previous spells. He gathers what energy he can but breaks his focus and lets out a massive explosive burst of energy that targets both the Undead and the surrounding creatures. He pauses for a moment as he creates bursts of negative energy simultaneously reviving and strengthening the undead’s health and injuring the hostile creatures. The Sorcerer is surprised at himself, and wonders if it was really him that had created the burst or the Kobald. He clears his mind and fires remaining targeted rays of negative energy to regenerate the zombies while in combat until they were defeated.

An exhausting trip for the group proceeds traveling through caverns and tunnels in the Plains. The group use numerous tactics and all supplies to press through each encounter. The caster was clearly skilled in their specialism. The Sorcerer was shielded from most of the battle and rendered useless once his energies were spent.

Following their return to the city the young Sorcerer lit a cigarette and puffed repeatedly. He contemplated that he has seen a number of Necromancer's openly practicing during his short time. Was this common? Perhaps they were more accepting, The general consensus was that some individuals did not shun the use of an undead creature as long as "the job got done" The young Sorcerer spent some time reflecting on what he had observed the caster do. Although not an innate caster there was much he observed and could learn from his specific craft. In his own opinion without the caster and his undead companions the group would not have made it out alive. The power and control the caster had over his unliving companions was indeed impressive. Time passed as he spent hours thinking over the events of that evening documented above.*

*The spells on the next few pages are begining to become more complicated, the young Sorcerer's arsenal of spells is starting to come together. It would take time to master such spells through research and studying.*

Vampiric Touch

*Some time has passed since the last entry. The young Sorcerer has been practicing his skills in the nearby caverns and Bonefields. He has become quite skilled by now in aiming and placing his spells in a mannor which he avoids being hurt by the blasts. The young Sorcerer has noticed there are many Arcane Casters who have learned their craft through study. Eager to develop his new found abilities he decideds to explore further around the Saltspar area. He travels via the portal, there he trades and barters with merchants for various supplies, although he does not draw his powers from studying and reading tomes, the scrolls and items are useful as a point of reference.

Not satisfied with the stores supplies of magical items he asks a familiar face for the location of other stores with a more "open minded" spell selection.

Joined by a Drow, who presented as competent with a bow and a Warlock the trio travelled together for many Cycles, they visited various Drider and Stinger caverns neither visit was without merit.

Equipped with various scrolls and magical items. The Sorcerer cast various protective enchantments on the pair. It was not long before they were set upon by numerous undead as they travelled, what felt like days the party continued , the sorcerer fascinated by each foe they encountered. The Sorcerer was unable to cast his usual spells on this enemy as they would have the reverse affect on the unliving. The warlock and the archer was more than capable to cut them down. The sorcerer maintained his efforts focusing on sustaining the protective enchantments, however even this took its tole.

Before long they searched caverns in the middle of the ruins was a large tower, It was time to return. The trio stood at the foot of a cavern, the Sorcerer felt this would be a good time to regain his energies, the group were set upon by Stingers. Perhaps this was not the place to rest. The road back to Saltspar was full of enemies hiding in the shadows. While the warlock and archer were enchanted in battle suddenly a Stinger Warrior leapt towards the Sorcerer, his strength was great and he was quicker than the undead enemies they had faced that he could easily evade. The Stinger advanced out of the darlness striking the Sorcerer with his tail, the wound was almost fatal he fell to the ground. The warlock quickly ran to his side and engaged the creature, the Sorcerer held out his hand, his palm glowing with negative energy, he attempted to hold the creature however cried out in pain because of his wounds. Suddenly life force was drawn from the creature, the Stinger fell to the floor dead following fatal blows from the archers bow, and the Sorcerer's wounds closed quickly without the aid of healing. He had somehow managed to drain the life of the Stinger and tempararily use it to sustain his own. He pauses for a moment, his blood rushing and heart racing to think on what had happened and how he survived. He felt full of life and sustained but knew this life force was borrowed. He made comment to those present that it was the first time such a spell had succeeded. The archer simply smiled darkly, The trio continued their journey until they reached a place of safety, the grateful Sorcerer thanked the group for their time and they parted their ways and once again the Sorcerer spent time reflecting upon previous events

*As you continue to flick through the tome the spells that follow to most are a questionable art to practice. The young Sorcerer has perhaps in his quest for knowledge and power been blind sighted from the toll such 'dark magics' can take on an individual. To drain a creatures life to sustain your own is questionable however more justified than just taking it by force. The spells that follow are complex however more powerful than the young Sorcerer ever dreamed he would be able to weild. He has come a long way from simple spells and is moving onto more powerful and deadly things.*

Animate Dead

*The young Sorcerer travels from middle outpost to the North of the caverns along the path he is met by a priestess, Yathrin and a Warrior. After introductions it would appear that this was a most fortunate meeting. The Warrior had "flexible" morals and a fixation on gathering coin. The young Sorcerer offered his protective magics in exchange for the company on his travels.

The trio travelled towards a nearby Slavers Tower, on route the. The Sorcerer was impressed with the priestess’ skills and could not imagine her in her prime. She had a elemental guardian which she commanded with exceptional control. She also showed a high level of tolerance. Within the next caverns they entered a tower where the Yathrin advised although the creatures inside would be terrifying the rewards would be worth it. Neither the slender Drow Sorcerer or the were warrior front line melee fighters, in fact the well spoken male advise he would need companions. This would be the Sorcerers opportunity to take advantage of the males "anything that gets the job done" attitude.

The Sorcerer was indeed jealous of the many scholars and learned casters he had encountered, he did not merit from hours reading and studying the arcane, however he had spent time looking over the specific scrolls he had purchased from the Keep. The Sorcerer learned by experience and he had enough experience from his practices and observations of others. He would not be able to conjure a living soul or consciousness, however he would be able to Animate a corpse for a companion to take the brunt of the battle ahead and there was more than sufficient where they were.

Just inside the entrance of the tower he emptied a pack of bones he had collected from his journey to the Bonefields, he had taken care to collect a whole fallen bones. The sorcerer focuses his energies on the bones on the ground, he created a ball of negative energy and directed it at the scattered bones. He removed a blade from his pack and cut deeply into the palm of his hand spilling his own blood on the ground. Using a scroll that was tucked in his robe sleeve as a reference, he began the incantation: 'Spirit that lives no more, too long have you been held by the shackles of death.' as he continues to read the blood he had spilled begins to bubble and boil. 'I call you back to the living plane, I bind your soul with body of the fallen' The scattered bones begin to rise up from the ground and slowly begin to take shape and flesh of a Zombie. 'Death you have no hold over this spirit, release them' A sword that had also been thrown to the ground rises up and flies towards the Zombie’s hand. 'Come back to the world you once knew, come back from the hell you were sent to. Awaken!' The ritual completes with the cavern shaking, the skeleton begins to move inturn all the joints in it's bones, lights appear in his eye sockets as he comes to life... well sort of. The Zombie stood gripping a large Sword and stood protectively next to the young Sorcerer. The sorcerer though weakened used the remaining energies to cast protective enchantments on the three present. The Sorcerer was feeding the skeleton with negative energy.

The trio proceeded through the tower with the Zombie warrior, it was not long before they were set upon by large group of Slavers who also had their own Undead Summons. There was also a fearsome hag who varied in size, the large ones were more of a challenge however with the zombie companion and elemental able to draw her attention. The Sorcerer focused on sustaining the protective magics and occasionally fired bursts of Negative energy at the creatures.

One of the group charged at the Sorcerer and he reached out attempting to drain the Life Force of the creature unsuccessful, he would have to find a way to protect himself from such. Sustaining his own energies.

Halt Undead
The Slaver summoned a group of 3 undead which surrounded the Sorcerer, Yathrin had the elemental run to break the groups concentration. The Sorcerer used a variation of the ghouls touch spell and managed to hold all three hostile undead in place. Yathrin commented that, such was a useful spell and the group slaughtered their enemies as they remained immobilised where they stood.

The male skilfully highlighted gas pockets within the tower and was able to gather treasures hidden away assumably by fallen adventurers who had ventured by. Sustaining the Animated creature took its toll on the Sorcerer, the pair stopped to allow for him to gather his energies. The Sorcerer broke his connection over the zombie and his bones fell lifeless to the ground, he gathered these in his pack and redacted his energies from the group. After a brief stop the Sorcerer thought that perhaps a fresher corpse to Animate would be less straining on his limited powers. He removed his blade and scattered his blood on the corpse of a fallen Zombie, he once again fired negative energy at the fallen creature and began chanting. The Corpse rose instantly and stood protectively at the side of the Sorcerer who was amazed at this achievement. The Animated Corpse was of course a very useful ally, although slower than some, the strength more than made up for its lack of haste.

Documented is the trio’s journey to the depths including an encounter with the hag. The trio returned to the outpost and finished their work for the Association. Time was spent at the portal, resting after a long journey. Once the male had bartered within the traders the rewards were indeed worth the journey. A spiders share was given to each, the Yathrin handed over the Sorcerer's share and he refused this noting her company was payment enough. The Sorcerer found a pair of boots and a robe with impressive magical properties.

The Sorcerer had achieved animation of a fallen corpse at last. A powerful companion, but not one that would be widely accepted. The Sorcerer decided he would have more discretion than the other Necromancer's he had encountered. He would only be able to practice in the privacy of his own company or trusted peers. He had a lot more to learn, there were many more powerful than him although he had progressed some since he first arrived on the Underdark City.

Yathrin had mentioned her frustration and inability to focus her energy to call an elemental from the plane of fire, because of what he had witnessed this day her personally was determined to seek a Tome that would please her*

Undeath to Death

*After the near escape from the Undead on recent travels the Sorcerer was discouraged from the Yathrin and Dark Archer’s display of power. With a new found determination the young Sorcerer would seek to expand his knowledge base and stick to where he was familiar. The Sorcerer had been accepted as an Initiate of House Rilyn’ervs and was determined to serve the house well.

The Sorcerer travelled alone with his now multiple Undead companions. The path through the Caverns was quiet, a few encounters with half breeds but nothing his arsenal of spells and Undead could not handle. The Sorcerer found himself face to face in ancient Ruins with a horde of undead creatures. In that moment for some reason he must have aggravated the undead creatures as they stared at the young Sorcerer. The Sorcerer fired a ray of negative energy and the creatures grew in power.

The Sorcerer's attention was drawn to another group of Weights, Warriors and wraiths approaching from the South while his undead were engaged. He rummages quickly in his pack and produced two vials of holy water. Unskilfully he threw a vial towards the group, who were mildly wounded as the vial of holy water exploded.

This angered the undead creatures on the ground and they charged towards the Sorcerer. The young Sorcerer took refuge in a across a bridge over a large chasm to restrict their number. He fled back following the bridge. Suddenly he was set upon by a number Undead warriors. Suddenly again it dawned on the young Sorcerer that his specific spell set made him extremely vulnerable to the undead. He fired a burst of negative energy towards the group, and watched as they fed off the burst appearing visibly stronger.

He was faced with a gathering of undead, the Sorcerer made haste and returned to some of the fallen undead from the previous encounter. He animated the corpses and cast various protective enchantments. The horde of undead creatures swarmed the Sorcerer and his undead companions. The Sorcerer stepped back and the undead surrounded the summoned undead.

The Sorcerer held on to his last vial of holy water tightly. It would not be enough to lay to rest the vast horde in front of him. Channelling as much power as he could into the psalm of his hand the Sorcerer began chanting focusing on enhancing the properties of the holy water.

The vial began to glow with a bright blinding golden shine. The Sorcerer threw the enchanted vial into the centre of the group. As the vial exploded a brilliant bright light shone through the bones and rotting flesh of his attackers. The creatures ran from the light and in turn many of them fell to the ground lifeless.

The Sorcerer approached the piles of scattered bones and animated one of the stronger undead. He cast various protective enchantments and headed towards the depths. This level of vulnerability was unacceptable.* The Sorcerer reflected that he would need to seek guidance from those in the Arcadum as Exemplar had instructed him to do so. He would prepare his roster to establish him as an initiate.
