Illusion:

"Subject nine. Repeat procedure."

The vampire took a single step forward, exposing it to the artificial daylight.

Its flesh began to whisp, then crumble, agony writ on the dominated being's features.

Caria observed dispassionately.

Seconds passed, and with a pained hiss, the vampire crumbled to ash.

Caria's expression did not change.

"Test nine concluded. No deviation from expected effects. Preliminary experiments with sunstone complete."

She rose, and recovered the glowing stone, clutching it in a skeletal hand as she made for her quarters.

Within, she had drawn a complex circle on the floor. Illusion. A very sophisticated illusion.

She set the sunstone at the heart of the circle.

Closing her eyes, she took a breath.

Then she spoke the words of activation, and felt the circle take effect.

The sweet scent of spring. The brilliant blue horizon. The rolling green fields.

He was there, and he smiled.

"I missed you, Caria."

She smiled in turn, eyes wet.

"I am sorry" she managed to choke out.

He frowned, drawing close.

"What burdens you so, on this beautiful day?"

She reached up, and put her hands on his shoulders.

"It is only-"

Her hands.

Her hands?

Flesh.

No.

Bone.

Disbelief set in.

The scene unraveled.

She was left with arms on nothing but air.

"Project concluded" she told an empty room.
