Keira Dayborne - Morningtouched, Chosen From Birth

Post by MarquisIllusion77 » Sun Dec 04, 2022 11:25 pm

These are the collective experiences, writings, and story of Keira Dayborne, for whom a destiny was chosen before her very birth.

Day 4, Month 5 (Mirtul), 178 AR

Keira looked around her. Shining mace and shield of light affixed with powerful runes, she peered over her bright phalanx as the hordes closed in. Orcs of every color, their steel clanging and teeth gnashing, eager to slaughter her and feast on her bones. Walking forward with golden purpose, she let loose her Lord's pent up fury. Now running with the winds of light at her back, she lept high in the air, summoning her radiant power to unleash upon her foes below. Overwhelmed by such blazing strength, they were all at once decimated under the weight of His Holy Word. Its light filled the ground, and then the sky, until all was basked in the purest white.

Not a moment later, she awoke in a sweat. Looking around the dark, and dingy inn room that she could only barely afford, she worked to calm herself. Another dream, and a pounding headache that so often accompanied them.

Just what were those strange creatures?

Day 8, Month 5 (Mirtul), 178 AR

Cold sweat beaded Keira's brow. In the dark shadowy corner of the alcove, her back against cold stone, Keira breathed laboriously as another pounding headache washed over her, like the violent throes of the wild sea against the rocks. This one was far worse than any previously - almost blinding. It throbbed between her temples, and she felt sure her head would split open at any moment.

Groaning under the weight of agony, Keira gripped first her tattered winter cloak, and then her fingers scraped against bare cold rock. Were they to turn bloody, she'd not notice, such was her torment. As her fingernails scraped against the stone, the tips began to glow the faintest gold - entirely unnoticed.

Keira's eyes slammed shut, every essence of her being pure pain as the glow began to lace itself between her fingertips, roaming up her arms and around her body, completely uncontrolled. Thankfully, no passersby happened upon her, for they would see a woman clad in shining ropes of light.

Just as soon as the latent power coursed over her, it disappeared, leaving again the dark and narrow street and the woman, completely drained. Slumped over and exhausted, Keira finally found rest in the winter cold. Her eyes closed, her head upon stone. And the dreams then begin anew...

Day 9, Month 5 (Mirtul), 178 AR

Keira stared into the fire before her, her hands outstretched to gather what warmth she could. Her mind, on the other hand, was elsewhere. The headaches were becoming more frequent. She'd seen healers and doctors - at least as she was able to given her stringent finances. Why now? Just as her fate seemed to turn. Why now?

House Misthollow...she remembered back to the wonderful conversation she had with Calli just the day before. What capacity could she possibly serve House Misthollow in? Even their retainers and servants are extra-ordinary men and women, capable of doing battle and using magic. She remembered her own embarassment at her familiarness towards Kathryn - a relative of the Queen! Gods, what if I had said the wrong thing?! she thought. House Misthollow...Kathryn...strange dreams...magic...headaches...

Do I really belong here?

Day 1, Month 6 (Kythorn), 178 AR

The golden stones hung in the air around her.

She sat, cross legged, arms and palms held up on either side. Around her, cloaked figures, obscured by the dark. But she was unafraid, for she walked with the Light. Summoning raw power from the depths of her being, she coalesced a ball of golden energy in her left palm. The figures stirred, unconvinced. Again, Keira summoned every fiber of evanescence that she knew lay within her, this time into her right palm. It glowed with intensity. The figures again stirred, still displeased. Fine. Keira thought. With a great sense of brightened fury, she reached out, eyes closed, and felt...

Ever so slowly, the room began to hum with the sparking power weaving its way through the figures, high overhead, and deep below. It came not from Keira, but to her. The figures looked left. They looked right. From the base of her seated form, ropes of golden light emerged and entwined around her, flowing into her outstretched hands. She need not have even tried - for the Light was given to Her to command. It grew and grew until the figures could do naught but retreat.

A moment later, she awoke in a cold sweat. Her whole body ached, and she looked at her palms. Her nails had dug so deeply into them that they were bleeding.

As Keira lay back down, she couldn't help but think... Not again...

Day 6, Month 6 (Kythorn), 178 AR

Keira sat upon the cold stone, her eyes on the altar. She thought about her days of training following the events in the square and at the Grand Temple with Calli. Each day, rote memorization of tenets and scripture. Each day, more boring than the next. And after the initial attempt to conjure magic, she had not been asked to do so again. Maybe Calli was wrong. Or maybe she was just hopeless. Weak. Maybe she didn't belong.

Her eyes roamed across the altar's stone face, following the curvature of the words inscribed thereupon.

Somehow being in this room, in the estate, all alone surrounded by silence, she felt at ease. Calm. Her eyes lost focus a little, and in the blur of her vision she began to see dancing golden light, weaving its own way through the stone, around the letters, backwards and forwards. Wafting to and fro, playful in a way...

It began to grow, brighter, more violent. It weaved its way around the stonework, and then into the floor, lacing through the large stone slabs and creating great runes of frightening holy power. It expanded across the ceiling and down the walls, forming a menacing latticework of power. Keira backed up, her vision in focus now, standing against the wall as her shoulder blades pressed into the stonework painfully. Her hands clawed at the wall's rough edges, trying to escape the spreading runes forged of light. It consumed the entire room, and then the entire estate, bathing everything in burning, blazing white.

---

Keira bolted upright, the dark of her bedroom at the manor all around her, her head threatening to split open with such pain. She wrapped her arms tightly around herself, and wept in pain and fear. Her whole body shaking, she wished she could remember what it was about her dream that scared her so...but all she could remember was the voice.
