I can't tell if this is an insanely good choice or a trap. It's a hand crossbow gated behind an insane UMD requirement for non elves, it's expensive as hell and grants point blank shot and another 5d6 sneak attack. But there's no rapid shot option as a crossbow so it seems you won't get many attacks.

Is this a super weapon worth gearing up UMD for? Or is it weaker than the alternative ranged options?

It's neat but not worth doing a whole build over, even fully feated unless for style/challenge/boredom reasons. You won't be better than an AA in any event, and if going UMD route it would only make sense with bard because i dont think the 5d6 adds to rogue sneaks, you would only get the highest sneak dice either from rogue levels or item. It might add to blackguard sneaks.

Yeah don't think it adds to rogue sneaks. It's pretty good on a zen archery cleric if that's still a build people even play. Evil surface elves can use them but not make them if I remember right.

I think，it could be nice for a rogue, zen archery characters, wizard and bard. Doing some extra damage. And it must be crafted by a drow....thou the dc is low, material is cheap, getting one is going to be difficult.

Loremaster may by-pass class restrictions but not racial ones

I am fairly certain the bonus sneak attack item feat does NOT stack with rogue sneak attacks. It will stack with blackguards and assassins I believe, though.

That in mind, rogues are probably the worst choice for this weapon.

It's sad about the not stacking with rogue sneak attacks thing.
