The problem here is as it ever was.

Basin saves and the prevalence of save dips makes DC dependant casting borderline irrelevant. Less so on infinicasters but the point stands.

This leaves most casters in a place where they are dependant upon summons. There is a loud corner of the community who hates summons and howls for their demise.

Some massive spell reworks have tried to address the DC problem where failed saves still do something, but its usually not consequential enough to make DC casting viable in and of itself.

So we have this conversation again and again.

To their credit, the staff has done any number of things to make these classes more playable, from gsf perk, to infini cantrips, to autocast, to spellmageddon, to encorporating some 5e ideas.

While all of these contribute to Wizarding qol, I dont think any of them address the basic issues encountered in PvP or the general save bloat of the server...mobs included.

Me. This is me. The reason I keep beating this drum is because I think the locus of power for any class should be the character, rather than something they can pull out of their hat. It's disappointing that summons are so vital to the gameplay loop of a wizard -- not just as a distraction or something to buy time, but in PVP, also a very vital source of damage. Although, I guess a very -unreliable- source of damage, now. Aside from the warlock's summon which is. Just the best.

I really don't have any contempt for summoners, and I want to stress that characters who want to -specialize- in summoning should be given the option and have something that is -satisfying-, but two years ago when I started playing arelith, the idea of buying summon monster scrolls as a martial was a little silly, because summon monsters for the amount of lore you could reach for your level -- even at very low levels -- were comparatively pretty awful without a -lot- of love and buffing.

Summons are really good. And so, they must die so that wizard can thrive.

I still think introducing additional feats for specialists to burn their feats on to narrow their field of specialization could be a pretty good solution if/when summons are gutted. More perks in their school, but less flexibility, etc.

Edit:
Good lord has it been THREE years? Time flies.
