Brawler/Pugilist Feat List

Post by ASqueakyPitFiend » Wed Dec 27, 2023 11:09 pm

After making several builds with these feats there are some issues with it outside of some bugs where you are not granted the correct damage or APR every time you rest or log in (an easy fix though is just unequipping and re-equipping the gloves/gauntlets).

Firstly, as it seems like these feats are going to be a large factor in the new monk rework, only monk seems to get any sort of damage progression with unarmed. This part is fine, but if you wanted to play a vigilante, liberator, or barbarian with unarmed you're far better off using a weapon due to the limitations to unarmed only giving you a 1d3 damage. Even with Pugilist, unarmed is outmatched by most 2H builds due to the raw damage of a Greatsword/Greataxe/Nodachi and crit frequency of a Falchion and even with Nodachi or Falchion all you have to do is spend 1 feat compared to 3 feats (or 1 if you dip Vigilante with the Dirty Fighting Pre-Req). Even large race does not give any sort of benefit to unarmed such as the 1d3 becoming a 1d6.

What I was thinking, to make these feats more appealing and offer some build variety without making unarmed superior to other weapons given its APR capability rivaling TWF is give a modified unarmed damage scaling to the feats.

Base: 1d3 + str mod
Brawler: 1d6 + str mod
Pugilist: 1d8 + 1.5x str mod

With unarmed being a base 20 crit range at x2, a lot of the 2H weapons can still outscale this due to newly introduced crafted weapons (such as the Heavenly Fire, Lawful Protector, or Profaned Decapitator) but at the same time they don't outright make unarmed a laughable choice. Also take into consideration the feat investment into these builds. To benefit fully from Pugilist, you must either dip into an alignment restricted Prestige Class, take a pre-req feat, or burn 3 feats in the Pre-Epics on an already relatively feat starved class (in the scenario of barbarian). Even as a barbarian you have to burn 2-3 feats with a dip because you gain none of the Barbarian Passive or Rage damage without Improved Unarmed.

This should help make these otherwise useless feats more viable as an alternative and offer a chance to make some more unique Roleplay incentivized character concepts.
