Starfish Needs You! (To cook up some fish)

Post by DM Starfish »

A few weeks ago I mentioned that I would write up a forum post where players could assist me with cooking up some new fish tables for the next stage of fishing on Arelith. I'm not quite sure how this will work but I will try to provide as much as I can and we can try to work from there.

What I need in the long run are fish names and images for their items, but the images can be found after. Each zone already has a certain amount of fish already implemented but this next phase will introduce things like seasons, weather, day/night and special locations.

The main focus is seasons, for now. Once seasons are done, it will be very very easy to mutate the loot tables into different variants for weather and time etc.

There is no easy way to portray tables on these forums and I am not sure if a collaborative google doc would be the correct solution either. I propose the following as a basic template. Feel free to expand upon or improve as seen fit. I will consider everything posted below.

(Feel free to reach out on Discord for quicker communication!)

Here is what I have so far, in google sheets: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

Column A is Summer, B is Autumn/Fall, C is Winter and D is Spring

Warm, Ocean, Huge, Rare, 5 Fish A, Fish B, Fish C, Fish D

And then beach, lake, river, swamp

And then repeat again for temperate, and then again for cold waters

Distribution in each 4x5 sub grid will have some common fish of that size that can be caught across every season. But certain fish will prefer one season over another and will wax and wane as the seasons pass. Sizes also blend into each other a little with larger or smaller fish appearing in the rarer sections of the current set.

An example distribution across a full rarity of one size might look like this:

Code: Select all

A B A C
D E D E
F D C G
H C I D
J H H H

K L E L
E J B J
B M M M
M N G N
O P L Q

R A J A
P S S B
G O Q T
U R T S
T U P U

With each letting being a type of fish.

All of this will be implemented in .2da format for ease of use, but at the moment it is a monumental task. I managed to complete all of the underdark and I am part way through warm but I am seriously struggling.

The vast majority of catchable things will only drop fish bits and nothing special. However chitinous shell/fish can drop tough shell, leathery fish can have hides and lots of other mixes of things. Bones, guts, blood, etc. But not all catches have to be fish. I have a mimic lined up for a catch in the underdark and I was considering axolotls and caiman for the jungle river/lake/swamp.

And as a final word, this is a big job. I don't expect anyone to slave away at this. I also reserve the right to not add things if I think they don't fit. I appreciate any progress that comes about because of the community efforts and any contributions will be appended to the release announcement.

Start with this: https://nookipedia.com/wiki/Fish/New_Horizons

And any that you haven't got already from here: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki ... es_of_Fish

I'm not joking, these two are probably the best + quickest resources for finding a good list of fish that will have the right amount of detail. If pictures can come later on then at least you'll have a list put together really quickly here.

RP only starts at 30 if you're a coward.

I can help you with ALL OF YOUR BATOIDEA NEEDS

I know the Stingray already exists in the game, but have some additional types of cartilaginous fish!

Skate - likely found in colder areas/colder months. Likely a fish that gives leather, but no bones. Oceans.
Electric Ray - warmer areas/warmer months in the ocean. Again, gives leather, no bones, maybe some sort of electricity-themed drop? (imagine butchering an electric ray and an deadly electrical trap pops out)
Devil Ray - deep ocean, warm/temperate. Leather, no bones.
Manta ray - Deep ocean, warm/temperate, rare catch. Personal bias showing here as mantas are one of my favorite animals, but manta rays would be releaseable (cannot butcher) for... maybe a small amount of experience?

Thoughts?

Yes! Mantas are great! I already added a special UD manta ray to the tables above.
