Once or twice when I first joined the server, but I found ships and just walking to be far more convenient and reliable, respectively. Especially considering that walking allows you to build knowledge of the server and landscape, which is just too darn useful.
That being said, if I didn't feel like finding a port or am too lazy to walk, I'd definitely be more inclined to use caravans if Grumpy's suggestions were implemented. The cutscene always bothered me, it just felt out of place, and I honestly hated waiting for so long when all I wanted to do was go from point A to point B. But having an option to pay gold and ride, or not pay and get a nifty little encounter out of it, maybe with the added bonus of some new friends in the form of fellow travelers, I'd use them a LOT more!
