Shelgarn's Persistent Blade Variety

Post by Felthorn » Fri Oct 04, 2019 3:34 pm

In short, add versatility to Shelgarn's Persistent Blade, and perhaps Mordenkainen's Sword and maybe even the BBoD, allowing it to scale with level and benefit from a variety of feats, through some combination of the following:

-Casting as usual summons a weak dagger, as normal. Alternatively, cast on an item in one's inventory to have the summon be wielding that item instead of the dagger.

-The level requirements of the item changes the hit dice and other stats of the summoned item. (The caster must be able to use the item in order to animate it, so no level 3's borrowing masterly damask +4 essence greatswords for easy leveling. But if that level 3 splurges on an iron longsword they'd be in good shape on a trip through the local infested mines.)

-Summoning damages weapons, and destruction of the summon heavily damages the weapon. This encourages RP by requiring casters to visit smiths to repair items and diminishes the spam factor of True Flame sorcs.

-SF Evocation improves basic stats as usual. Transmutation foci could reduce damage to the item from summoning, letting you use the same item for longer spans of time. Conjuration foci could improve durations to turns or hours/level.

-Mordenkainen's Sword could work by animating a suit of armor, maybe, for a really tanky summon? BBoD could consume items entirely to summon a supercharged version of it?

I see this helping a lot in several regards, for one adding a lot of variety to True Flame sorcs across all levels beyond spamming persistent blade at low levels and then forgetting the spell at high levels, as well as providing another layer of complexity and fun for all mages who may like the chance to basically design their own summons.

I'm definitely happy with the variety suggested here, though as normal, balance is a potential issue.

Though if any developer wants to try something with these spells - Approved.
