Reduce Brew Potion Cost (slightly)

Post by SkipiusEsq » Wed Sep 23, 2020 1:22 pm

It currently costs drastically more to create a potion as compare to a wand. In base NWN, wands costs (in both gold and XP) 15 times what it costs to make a potion. This makes sense given that wands have lots of charges and can only be used by some while potions is a single shot deal and can be used by all.

Wands have been reduced on Arelth (thankfully) but not potions. The difference now is large. For example,, a Cat's Grace (15) wand with 30 charges costs us under 4,000 gold and 240 xp to make. To make 30 Cat's Grace (15) potions, it costs 13,500 gold and 1,800 xp.

Right now a mundane charcter is penalized for not taking a UMD dip class or a class that gets access to a certain type of spells (arcane or divine) for wand purposes. The "penalty" is in the form of the cost to obtain the items to buff that character. A mundane without UMD relies on either zoo pots from NPC vendors that last 3 turns (having to use them multiple times in any dungeon crawl) or buying them for an excessive price from PC vendors. That mundane will likely spend in excess of 20,000 gold for what a UMD toon can get for close to 6,000.

Potions can be used at twice the speed, but they also invite an attack of opportunity. They also drop you out of certain modes, such as expertise, meaning your AC drops PLUS you get an attack of opportunity. So while it might save you some time in the initial buff stage before delving into a dungeon, using a potion in either PvE or PvP has risks not associated with wands.

To try and balance these issues and still making potions a viable source without having an inflated market, my suggestion is:

Brew Potion be reduced to x7 on gold and x0.5 on xp.

That means that 10 zoo buff potions would cost 2,100 gold and 150 xp. So 50 potions would be 10,500 gold and 750 xp. Still more expensive than wands, but not as punishing. This would allow players to sell potions in shops for a more reasonable price. That not only benefits mundanes without a UMD dip, but also will benefit lower level character with low gold (especially considering that even those that take UMD dips often don't until the mid- to late-20s so they can also get the tumble dump).

Approved for taking another look at brew pot costs, but any changes will be subject to the rest of the teams discretion.
