Vampires: To slay or not to slay

Post by Bashagain » Fri Oct 20, 2017 7:06 pm

Pop quiz: You’re riding your horse at 3 leagues an hour. Before you on the road stands a vampire in midst of feeding, clutching its prey. What do you do? What... do you do? (Be sure to re-read the question in your best Keanu Reeves impression)

FR vampires are just intelligent sentient predators who want nothing but self empowerment and to feed.

Logically speaking, you kill them whenever possible.

Can they not also be tragic anti-heros?

Perhaps the same could be said of humans.

This is where I would slay vampires, if I had a character that was capable of killing anything.

Humans don't have to attack and potentially kill other humans on the regular to survive. Vampires do.

Libris Mortis (I think) specifically mentions that while vampires are free-willed, and aren't forcibly alignment shifted, all of them that exist long enough will eventually end up moving to Chaotic Evil because of their thirst and the actions they have to undertake to slake it.

Think you would be hard pressed to find an epic level adventurer that hasn't killed scores of humans to get there. The various pirate areas are the most frequented leveling zones.

The point is that vampires have no emotional capacity or attachment, they're intelligent animals that want to feed. They've no capacity for any other form of self-fulfilment.

I'm not saying killing people is inherently evil (And certainly not killing people who attempt to murder everyone they see for their own profit, as said pirates do). I'm saying that killing people for no reason other than because you're addicted to eating them, is evil.

Everything I can find about vampires in that book and in the Monster Manual says that vampires are always evil, but can be any evil.

I mean, you don't have to kill those pirates; only ridiculously bloodthirsty adventurers have any desire to go and beat on them. Bill F. Armer who makes his life picking fruit can live off eating berries and steak. He doesn't need to go and kill people to sustain himself.

Vampires do, thus vampires are evil. Also animating the undead is arbitrarily flagged as evil by game mechanics, so whether one likes it or not they're evil. Right or wrong is nothing in the face of inscrutable and arbitrary notions of good and evil, after all.

The only anti-hero vampire I'd accept is Cain. Evil to the core, laughs out loud at the misery and death of others and flat-out murders anyone that gets in his way.
