Hi!
When you summon your companion, the feat remains active (even after they die). It only becomes inactive when you try to use it before the timer is up however it doesn't re-activate when the timer is finished.
This can be difficult if you are in combat and don't know if your companion has been returned or if you think the active feat means that the companion is back and try to use it (effectively disabling it until your next rest).
