The Fugue, Death, and Servers

Post by Archnon »

So, I want to preface this by saying that I love the Fugue. I especially love it now that you don't get burdened by your earthly possessions. I think it is super cool area, and if you haven't walked the whole thing, I really hope you do so next time you find yourself there! Fun stuff to find!

However, I have walked the whole thing and I have a bit of a complaint. The Fugue as it stands, does not play well with server transitions. If you are a UD race and get killed on the surface, there is no path between those servers. You can transition to cities and planes from surface, but not UD. Now, if you are in the right part of the surface, you can end up on Cities and Planes and not in Cordor. On the wrong part, and you can end up in Cordor. I imagine some of the other server transitions are similar and are all a product of the switch to 3 servers.

Now I know that flagging a tombstone before death is key to get back to your stomping grounds. However, if those don't work across fugues, then you can end up in some funky areas. This can be especially frustrating for new players who can get res'ed in a hostile area. (The Surface caves come to mind)

I don't know what the solution is but it could include:
1.) Putting doors to all other servers
2.) having all life portals go to the server portal selection room first. Then you can choose your server.
3.) Standardizing tomb markers to go across servers (this sounds the toughest)

I know this sounds like a suggestion but I am putting it in feedback in the hopes that someone can be like.... "Actually you can just do this and get back to your preferred server" but I haven't heard that yet.

Just out of curiosity-- what if the portal out of Fugue was just a standard one-way portal and you could go to any destination on your list?

So... Death...

Firstly, I love the idea of a death area and a lost wandering maze for a soul to follow to their ressurection by their god. It gives a unique and otherwise fulfilling minigame, having to navigate the fugue to essentially 'find your way back'... the first two times.

AFter that, it just becomes a medium for tedium. The walk to the Fugue portal just becomes mundane, boring... and ultimately just a 5 minute wait to return to life.

Coupled with the ease of destruction when it comes to corpse bashing, and after a lot of PVP scenarios it becomes a 5 minute holding pit for you to sit and just stew, until you are eventually resurrected to your death effects.

The Fugue is something that is a useful thing, but it needs some help, but I don't think that allowing you to be portaled directly to a portal from the wall is it.

Personally, I'm up for something like if you aren't resurrected by someone healing you on the spot, being resurrected in some form of hospital or care facility would be more appropriate than the gravesites we see currently. Being brought back to life in a shining bright light from the sky is great for the Single Player Campaign, but in a persistent world, we could do much more with it.

Being brought back to life in a ward of a church, or a witches hut surrounded by potions and tonics like your body was drug there for a purpose makes a lot more sense, especially in the consideration that as we know well on Arelith, Death isn't actually -death-. With no true persistence of death or its effects, I've personally begun to see a rise in cases of immortality going around, characters that constantly become slain only to 'cheat death' and it's repercussions. Having a more thematically sound place to be raised makes a lot of sense, and could add to roleplay.

In addition, yes, the Fugue itself needs work. It hasn't been updated since the times the servers were split, so there are not transitionable fugues between the four planes as would normally be found.

Perhaps a redux based on the 4 portals room? A room with resurrection destinations for all 4 servers, so if you are to be brought back to life, you can easily change between the servers.
