Call Of The Wild companion bonus AC

[METHOD]

Expected: Call Of The Wild grants companion bonus AC equal to full CON mod.

Result: Call Of The Wild seems to only grant companion bonus AC equal to hard CON mod.

This persists after rest, re-log, map transition and server transition*.

*I noticed that Awaken does not appear to survive server transition.

I could have sworn that as of about a week ago, this feat granted the full CON mod (counting gear, zoo spells) in bonus AC to your companion and that this displayed in the companion character sheet.

Now it appears to only grant hard CON mod, or at least that is what I think I am seeing in the companion character sheet.

That is, increasing my character's CON with endurance spell or decreasing my character's CON by removing +CON gear does not impact the AC displayed in the companion character sheet.

This fellow ranger post seems to corroborate what I thought I was previously seeing.

I have a STR Ranger Firbolg. He has 16 CON base.

Do also take Call of the Wild. +9 AC on your animal companion will elevate it a lot in usefulness

The wiki does seem to indicate it was soft mod also, if it has changed I or another dev will likely update this thread.

From what I can see it is giving the correct AC, it is however typed as Shield type AC, so it will always take the highest instance.
If there is, for whatever reason, another source of shield AC on the creature that may be why it is reporting less than actual.
I'm going to see about swapping this to dodge AC since this is a feat tax for effectively less than advertised.

I thought it was typed as shield AC to not penalise rangers with high CON for using mage armour / haste etc on their pets, since until the fairly recent ability to feed companions shield potions, I don't think it was possible to give them shield AC.

Anecdotally, I could have sworn last week or so I saw 53 AC on my companion character sheet, and I don't think I had my character or companion fully warded. Now the best I could do was 51. So that's what got me scratching my head.

I don't really know the math on base companion AC so it may be that I just don't understand how it is supposed to work (despite what I think I saw last week).

I do know that before I took Call Of The Wild, I could get the companion character sheet to 46 AC because I have a screenshot. Based on that, I would expect the companion to hit 55 AC with Call Of The Wild and base CON16 buffed to CON28 (+9).

I think the last time I tried to feed a shield potion to my companion it just applied the shield spell to my character. In any case, I was not applying any deflection AC to the companion other than mage armor, at least as far as I know.

I think one point of emphasis for me is that modifying my full CON mod by drinking endurance potions or removing multiple pieces of +CON gear did not change my companion character sheet AC. So, again, it may be that I don't understand the use and application of the feat and that I was mistaken as to what I saw.

If you are ranger 27 with base CON16 and Call Of The Wild and a badger companion, what would be the expected AC of the badger after the following spells - cats grace (DEX+6), awaken, greater magic fang, barkskin (+5), mage armor, plus character fully buffed to CON28?

Something to note is that it will take your CON mod at the exact moment you cast the spell.
For example, I've always been using a Standard bearer spear to reach +12 soft CON with Aura of vitality before casting Awaken.
The buff from Aura of vitality will eventually go away, but that will have no effects on the bonus CON from Awaken. I think?

Functionally dodge AC stacks, and with how short a duration shield potions are I am sure the limited use for boss fights to make them marginally more tanky will be appreciated.

Edit: Went and checked because I wasn't sure, it seems the shield spell actually gives deflection AC anyway.

As for the AC and the discussion about when it applies, it is indeed at the moment of casting that it calculates.
For this reason make sure you reach the +12 to con limit when using awaken.
That will effectively give you your hard con mod + 6 to the AC.

As I might have suspected, it turns out I was just ignorant of how it worked is all. I hit the AC I was expecting (55) after I went full CON buff -before- casting Awaken.

Yup. Buff your con before doing awaken. I have had maybe 3-5 "rests of Shame" realizing I either swapped the order, or flubbed buffing (I relied on +5 Bear's Endurance, so sometimes I would autopilot two Bear's casts -> Awaken, only to see -1AC and be very angry about it)
