The fact that Eschew Material even exists serves as proof that spell components are a poor design in general.
Or maybe Eschew Material is poor design, or used in the wrong way. I'd argue it should be removed or moved to lvl 28+ for all mage classes. The gold sink in components is quite necessary.
But it's not a gold sink. It's a time sink. It drains 0 gold when you make your own components. It's a time sink that you can occasionally buy your way out of if someone else has spent the time for you, which is not the case for other consumables in quite the same way.
You know what would make it a gold sink? If I could buy it in Ye Olde Magick Shoppe like a proper wizard would.

I very much agree with this. Both spell components and item wear/repair kits are not gold sinks - they are a mandatory CP drain that shoehorns character builds into certain crafting trades.
You rarely see these crafting products in shops unless severly overpriced. Most production of these items goes to personal use.
It doesn't help that it takes so much time to farm greenstone. Could the drops from low-tier gem nodes like malachite and greenstone be boosted to be like coal and give 8 or 9 chunks per node to make it less grindy to acquire?
While we're at it, lower the item value of spell components. The reason you never see spell components below a certain price is appraise builds can make more money selling spell components to vendors than it costs to buy them. People will scoop up any 400-500g spell components to vendor sell.
First let me say I adore the class! It's probably my favourite now. My only issue as a hemo is that the first signature spell costs spell components. Only one but it adds up when using other spells and I would argue eles ability is much stronger and sits at tier 5.
As for components in general like all mages I hate em. Sure warriors types have to fix their equipment but in most cases it costs nothing but a quick dip in a crafting station no supplies. While my poor 8 str mage has to lug around heavy resources. Remove the glass requirement and change it to malachite and greenstone for both recipes. Be great if the 50 cap per pouch increased to 100
