Wildmage is an interesting path in that once upon a time it was arguably the main "pvp path" for a wizard. This was due to a number of factors that made -Fate incredibly strong. Avascular Mass had a counter but it was both largely unknown and much more specific than its current counter mechanic, the Mass Elemental Shields surge hadn't yet been nerfed, and the Runic Sequencer update hadn't dropped yet (this update makes it riskier to use spells and cantrips haphazardly because the monolith will replace your current warded summon while simultaneously needing new wards of its own). Since then, other wizard paths/specializations such as Diviner, Enchanter, and Illusionist have also become incredible in their own rights and provide not only highly prized features but also offer a slew of bonus spell slots at almost no cost in some cases (Illusionist spec for example is arguably worth taking just for the bonus slots even if you have no intention of taking illusion foci).
For these reasons the downsides of being a Wildmage (loss of spellslots due to not being able to specialize, the arrangement of the surge table making the 50% of a 27/3 much less useful than the 100% of a 30, etc.) have become much more pronounced over time compared to when they were originally implemented. In my opinion a good solution to this would be a spell of 8th or even 9th circle which simply boosts a Wildmage's effective Wildmage level by 1 for the purposes of -Fate. This would allow for 27/3 Wildmages to capture the current effectiveness of -Fate but not without a fairly heavy penalty compared to pure classed Wildmages. Part of why I think this is a good solution is that a lot of Wildmage's class design is in a good place imo. Wildmage is a ride and a fun one. Griefing via spamming for the demon surge aside, the most common thing I hear talked about between Wildmages is stories of rp that unfolded because of things that went wrong and I think that's a strength of the class that a broader redesign might risk discarding or diminishing. Allowing 27/3 Wildmages to expend a spell slot (or even an epic feat if we're talking "any" kind of spell) would breathe a lot of utility into the class without opening it to the same degree of utility other Wiz builds enjoy (in this hypothetical they wouldn't be able to manage perfect -Fate odds while going 25Wiz/5LM for example nor could they get perfect odds while mixing in a 3 dip and one of the Harper/Zhent caster options).
Edit: I should have thought of this and apologize for not including it initially. But while it's still early into making this thread I'd also highlight another reason I feel Wildmage has fallen off some due to indirect changes. A lot of Wildmage's formerly unique class features and spells have also become non-specific to them. The chief example of this being the Elemental Monoliths. These types of changes don't directly weaken Wildmages but it does weaken the value proposition these features once offered when they were purely unique to WMs.
A spell for Wildmages to boost their -Fate odds
