Models on NWN

Post by Dreams »

This is our current Cave Bear (Young):

A bunch of the models we have come from the wider NWN community and I was wondering since we have some things that are more or less ripped from other games, can we do the same for more aesthetic clothing options? There are many options for female characters that have gone in but far less for male characters. A lot of them are already made and in various packs on the NWN Vault in some form or another.

What are the standards required for us to use models in Arelith content?

There's a whole process involved with adding them and certain skills are needed to do so. Someone has to be available to do the work.

When haks were first introduced to Arelith, after it had existed since its inception as the "easy access no hak server" (changing because of the NWN:EE downloader making haks easier to add), it was stipulated that hak additions like new models would be a very light touch, carefully curated to avoid anything terribly disruptive being added.

My personal sentiment is that a lot of the models that we've gained look very...mismatched to the base game. Whether they be new heads, clothing options, or monster models. I am a big fan of many of the new additions, but there are definitely quite a few like this bear that seem to have slipped through the cracks and are always very jarring and disruptive to immersion when seen.

If more things get added, I'm hopeful that they are given a little more review. Whether or not a model is disruptive to the setting, I think there should be some consideration as to whether it looks particularly strange or out of place next to the rest of the game's models.

That cave bear is too young to have a tattoo.

It would be nice to see a review process that prevents things like the awful Movie Poster Aaragorn male head.

the presence of skilled modelers to make our own heads with instead of using what's available on the vault.

I agree that it's worse to introduce new models that don't fit the wider NWN aesthetic, than to just use old models. That new cave bear for example looks really out of place and I for one don't like it.

Some other new models are cool and do fit, like the displacer beasts for example.

It's my fault! We will remove the wow bear if we haven't already.

New models and things have been added with my approval, sometimes it takes seeing them being used in game for me to realise that they aren't a good fit. It's an iterative process.

I for one really liked the new cave bear model (and foxes!).

Having played this game for a good decade and a half, it is refreshing to see new things. And I rather have the devs experiment with additional models and take it down later, then never introducing them in the first place.
