Generic boring hello thread

Post by ukpezzzz »

Sorry if this is in the wrong section and I have been blind. Didn't see a "Hello!" section here that some forums have.
And, I promise I will make this a little more productive that just a generic "Hellooooo, my nameeee is pezzzzzz, I am from the UK and like peanuts!"

So, a little context.

I've been RPing in game in World of Warcraft from 2016-2023 before burning out of the setting. I took the chance to have a break from it all for a while. Part of the burnout was that the rp scene was dead, and it still is. So now, I looked to D&D as it has a wide array of interest so it won't be hard to find rp scenes. I am trying discord Play-By-Post in 5e, but it is painfully slow. I thought... I wonder if people rp in BG3... or NWN, that was basically BG3 20 years ago and better suited for it. Low and behold, this server is at the top of the multiplayer list.

So, to cut the bullshit, what are some good tips to getting into this server, its setting, and 3rd edition D&D which I haven't looked at in years? I got some characters I can spin into NWN from my WoW days which I enjoy playing and people seemingly enjoy being around. How would that look? What is there for a new person to do to find a purpose and meet people stepping out of the noob-gate for the first time?

Thanks for reading, my name is pez, I am from the uk and I like peanuts.

Getting a hang of the jank old system can be tough. I know some struggle with the mix of wasd and click to move. Beyond that just surface level knowledge of the forgotten realms is more than enough. If you've played bg3, you're probably good to go. I recommend you just jump in with a character, pick a starting location, and have at it. Talk to players ICly for questions about the world and OOCly (in tells) for questions about mechanics. Remember, the wiki is your friend. If all else fails, discord is pretty reliable.

I am jealous that you get to learn it all for the first time. Wish I could do that again.

Yeaaa I already rebound the WASD movement a little as the default was painful.

I suppose I can do what I did with the PbP settings and just be a far off adventurer coming from a distant land to explain gaps in knowledge.

I assume tells is direct messaging in game, which means OOC general chat isn't really a thing from the channel options I saw.

Is this discord an Arelith server?

This is the official Discord server for us. If you've played BG3 you've probably got a half-decent grasp of things, since 5e/BG3 backtracked on a lot of the changes of 4e, lore-wise. But playing someone 'not from around here' is a great way to get away with any mistakes you might make, but also don't worry about making said mistakes. Welcome!

Hi and welcome,

Try the packages and the recommended button for character creation. They’ve been modified to cater to new players but feedback has been limited. Let me know if anything can be improved.

For you, the day Kenji overhauled your class was the most important day of your life.
But for me, it was Tuesday. :face_with_monocle: To-do list

My recommendation is to start simple and ease yourself into the server environment and mechanics. Don't start off making an animator, slave or outcast. The easiest way to get involved and across things in my opinion is to start off either in Andunor (Underdark) as a monster race or in Cordor as a plain human. Skal is also an option, but Skal can be a bit wild wild west for new players.

There are many factions in both Cordor and Andunor that you can attach yourself to. Which is another recommendation. Joining the Cordor Guard or making a Kobold and joining the Shadowclaw for example is a great way to get introduced to groups of players who have experience, can answer your questions and help you to get settled in.

Then over time read the wiki, ensure you are familiar with the rules as well of course. And other than that, just enjoy yourself, roleplay, tell good stories. There is so much to learn on Arelith and it can be overwhelming. So don't beat yourself up if you make a mistake. Treat others as you'd like to be treated is a good way to summarize the rules

Currently playing:
Eduard Helbrecht - Active

Thomas Castemont - Shelved

Liv McDowall - Rolled
Theodor Helbrecht - Rolled
Emma Young - Rolled
Ember Joyleaf-Underfoot - Rolled

As you probably know given your experience you are in the absolute finest moment when it comes to any roleplay setting - the beginning. Everything is completely fresh. Don't rush the experience.

My greatest suggestion beyond getting comfortable with the mechanics after what class your choose: do not be afraid to speak with people. Very often new players never speak to people then continue on in their Arelith career with that same anti-social behavior - essentially desiring to not be a burden to anyone.
