Grenade DC's - Confused!

Post by Marla McGivers »

Hi all,

I'm baffled by the DC's I'm seeing when using Choking Powder, with my Rogue and wonder if anyone can help clear up what's happening?

My Rogue is level 15. She recently took Gruesome Technique, but does not currently have Grenadier Basics.

She threw a choking powder at a group of foes and I noticed the DC was showing as 16.

This confused me as, after reading the Wiki on Grenades and Gruesome Technique I saw the following information:

Grenade DC = 10 + Dex Modifier.

Gruesome Technique adds +4 DC to Choking powder.

So, i calculated that my DC should be as follows, 10 (Base) + 12 (Dex modifier) + 4 (Gruesome) = 26 yet the report showed as 16.

I wondered, since the difference was 10, if it was because you get the 10 when taking Grenadier Basics. So I logged into the PGCC server, gave her Grenadier Basics, seeing that this also added Rogue levels / 3 to the DC and tried it out.

So, again I added it up. 10 (Base) + 13 (Dex now at +13) + 4 (Gruesome) + 15/3 - 5 = 32 DC

The DC I got back was 28.

I tested this with crafted choking powder and ones found in loot, same result.

I contacted a player in game who kindly went over it with me and they were unsure as to why this was happening as well.

So, does anyone know what's happening here?

Thanks

Marla

Those are actually two entirely different things!

Gruesome Technique and Grenadier Basics don't interact with each other and if you use Choking Powder with Gruesome Technique, you should actually see enemies rolling two saving throws (as long as they aren't poison or fear immune).

1) Poison saving throw - that one gets affected by Grenadier Basics with the DC calculation as you described. Gruesome Technique doesn't apply here, so 10 (Base) + 13 (DEX) + (15/3) = 28 is correct.

2) The +4 DC from Gruesome Technique for Choking Powder only applies to the separate fear saving throw - so 20 (Base) + 4 (Gruesome) + (whatever intimidate you have divided by five)
