Always thought it'd add a new layer of stealth and tactics, that, if one was engaged in combat too long, NPC combatants would call for more allies.
Able to pick them off one-by-one, or at least swiftly? Then no reinforcements. A knock-down-drag-out fight? They call friends and you're ambushed mid battle. Granted in some zones it wouldn't make sense, but for more intelligent enemies and in dungeon atmospheres specifically, it seems like it'd make things more challenging. Ergo, more fun!
